The International Dairy Federation recently convened the Regional Dairy Conference Africa in Zimbabwe, bringing together key stakeholders shaping the future of the dairy sector across the continent.

The conference also highlighted a critical challenge: while Zimbabwe’s milk production surpassed 120 million litres in 2025, smallholder farmers contribute only about 5% of total output.

👩🏽‍🌾 Stories like Yemurai Mhaka’s show how empowering smallholder farmers, especially women can transform livelihoods. The message is clear: placing them at the centre is essential to Africa’s dairy transformation.

𝐌𝐚𝐫𝐜𝐡 𝟐𝟎𝟐𝟔- 𝐊𝐚𝐬𝐮𝐦𝐛𝐚𝐥𝐞𝐬𝐚 || We Effect Zambia and District Women Associations conducted a market research visit to the Kasumbalesa border goat market under the Women Economic Empowerment (WEE) Project. The learning revealed strong demand for goats, with over 12,000 traded monthly and prices ranging from K1,100 to K3,000, presenting a major income opportunity for women farmers. The findings will help strengthen collective marketing and direct market linkages, ensuring women producers earn fairer prices and increase their economic power.

𝐇𝐀𝐏𝐏𝐘 𝐅𝐑𝐈𝐃𝐀𝐘 😇 𝐖𝐄 𝐒𝐀𝐘 𝐁𝐘𝐄 𝐓𝐎 𝐓𝐇𝐄 𝐒𝐖𝐄𝐃𝐈𝐒𝐇 𝐌𝐏𝐬 𝐃𝐄𝐋𝐄𝐆𝐀𝐓𝐈𝐎𝐍 𝐓𝐎 𝐋𝐔𝐒𝐀𝐊𝐀.
We proudly hosted the final activity of the visit with the Swedish Members of Parliament through an exhibition and a vibrant panel discussion on the role of women in the cotton sector. Farmers openly shared the challenges they face, from prices and climate shocks to access to markets but also spoke about hope through diversification into food crops and alternative income streams for stability. During the closing remarks, Members of Parliament representative Anna-Caren Sätherberg who is a Member of Parliament & Rural Policy Spokesperson thanked We Effect for the impactful work, describing the initiative as a clear example of solidarity turning into real change in people’s lives. She closed with an emphatic chant “Viva Cooperatives”.

Speaking at the exhibition, Rahel Hailu who represented the Embassy of Sweden in Adis Ababa emphasized the importance of women inclusion and creativity in dealing with climate shocks as well as the shrinking donor landscape. She also assured the room of their willingness to continue supporting the WEECVC Project.
