This Cotton Week, we highlight Sithembile Mtetwa, 50, from Nehanda Village in Chipinge District, Zimbabwe. Through the Zimbabwe Farmers' Union under the ๐–๐จ๐ฆ๐ž๐ง ๐„๐œ๐จ๐ง๐จ๐ฆ๐ข๐œ ๐„๐ฆ๐ฉ๐จ๐ฐ๐ž๐ซ๐ฆ๐ž๐ง๐ญ ๐ข๐ง ๐ญ๐ก๐ž ๐‚๐จ๐ญ๐ญ๐จ๐ง ๐•๐š๐ฅ๐ฎ๐ž ๐‚๐ก๐š๐ข๐ง #๐–๐„๐„๐‚๐•๐‚ ๐ฉ๐ซ๐จ๐ฃ๐ž๐œ๐ญ, Sithembile used income from cotton production and savings from her Village Savings and Loan Association to expand her farming business. ๐ŸŒฑ๐Ÿ’ฐ๐Ÿค

๐Ÿงต๐ŸŒฟ She invested her cotton profits and savings in a borehole, a JoJo water tank, and an irrigation system, enabling year-round production on her one-hectare garden. She now grows tomatoes, onions, leafy vegetables, and fruit trees, providing food and income for her household.

Her experience demonstrates how cotton income, savings, and investment in irrigation can help women diversify their livelihoods. By sharing her knowledge, Sithembile supports other women in pursuing their own farming goals.

As we continue celebrating Cotton Week, we highlight the inspiring story of Mary Zimba, whose journey shows how skills development and entrepreneurship can create pathways to economic resilience. ๐ŸŒฟ

Mary Zimbaโ€™s journey is a compelling example of transformational growth and resilience. With support from the Handloom and Textiles Technologies Association of Zambia and We Effect initiatives, she has expanded her livelihood from tailoring into poultry farming, creating new opportunities for herself and her family. ๐Ÿ’ช

Initially, Mary relied solely on her tailoring skills, sewing uniforms and clothing for customers to earn an income. Motivated to build a more secure, sustainable future, she ventured into poultry farming, raising chickens and diversifying her householdโ€™s income sources. ๐Ÿงตโžก๏ธ๐Ÿ”

This transition has not only increased her earnings but also strengthened her familyโ€™s economic security and ability to withstand challenges. ๐Ÿ“ˆ๐Ÿก

๐ŸŒฑ This ๐–๐จ๐ซ๐ฅ๐ ๐‚๐จ๐ญ๐ญ๐จ๐ง ๐–๐ž๐ž๐ค, we are highlighting how cotton farming creates opportunities for women and their communities.

๐Ÿ“ In Salima district, Malawi, Enelesi Yohane began with one acre of cotton. Income from her 2023 harvest enabled her to buy cattle and a sewing machine, which became the foundation of her tailoring business.

Through the WEECVC project, implemented by AICC- African Institute of Corporate Citizenship with support from We Effect, Enelesi gained farming and financial management skills by joining study circles and participating in a Village Savings and Loan Association. ๐Ÿค

๐Ÿงต By 2024, she expanded her cotton farm to five acres and established the Muchedwanazo Tailoring and Designing School, where seven students have completed their training.

Enelesiโ€™s story demonstrates how income from cotton, combined with skills and support, enables women to diversify their income and provide learning opportunities for young people. ๐Ÿ’š

With the additional income, Anastazia bought a goat and fertilizer for her Irish potato garden, helping her grow more food for her family and produce a surplus to sell.

For Sophia Phiri from Lundazi District, harvesting sunflowers marked the beginning of a more secure future. ๐ŸŒฑ

Like many rural women, Sophia was determined to improve her familyโ€™s life, but she did not have access to finance or business opportunities.

Through business management training from We Effect and participation in a Village Savings and Loan Association she gained the skills, confidence, and access to finance she needed to start earning more. ๐Ÿ’ฐ

Sophia started by growing sunflowers and used her profits to establish a poultry business. As she earned more, she expanded into goat and pig farming, giving her family more ways to earn an income and strengthening their financial security. ๐ŸŒป๐Ÿ”๐Ÿ๐Ÿ–

Recognising the value of group savings, Sophia established a VSLA within her local club. Through her leadership, more women can now save, access loans, and invest in their own businesses. ๐Ÿค๐Ÿพ

Today, Sophiaโ€™s businesses provide her family with a steadier income and a better quality of life. She also plans to venture into sausage production, creating another source of income for her household.

Sophiaโ€™s story shows what can happen when rural women have access to business skills, finance, and supportive savings groups. One opportunity can lead to multiple businesses, while one womanโ€™s success can inspire an entire community. ๐Ÿ’ช๐Ÿพโœจ
