What is FYRS
FYRS, Forum for youth Research and sensitization is a non-governmental organization that was established by the interest of the youths from various sectors of society. A group of well-organized youths decided to establish an organization that would meet their various challenges in the society. For instance, unemployment, lack of carrier guidance and vocational skills, entrepreneurship skills and most important a platform to freely share their innovative ideas. FYRS was then established by youths facing different various challenges in the society. With one common interest, these youths came up with Forum for Youth Research and Sensitization. “Forum” meant that this organization must create a conducive environment that would allow youths facing different challenges in life express themselves freely without being intimidated by hegemonic dominance. “Youths” meant that the organization had a specific population that it was targeting, and these where the youths, the most vulnerable group in the society. “Research” meant that these youths would engage various techniques and methods of sourcing information on how to improve and contribute to economic development through youth participation. They will carry out research programs on how to better the living standards of youths in the society, and most important, employing sustain measures. “Sensitization” this meant that youths would sensitize their fellow youths on practical survival skills, engagement strategies, advocacy abilities, lobby skills, youth representation, and many more life changing ideas that would impact youths within the community. Then these organized youths decided to “changing mindsets” of individuals in order to enhance development.
With this in hand, the organization officially got establishment in 2015 at the University of Zambia. Over the past few years, the organization has received an overwhelming response from youths facing similar challenges across societies. A lot of ideas from zealous young men and women have come aboard, new innovative proposals have been documented that would help vulnerable youths in the society to employ and improve themselves.
FYRS has in the past few years invited various stockholders to help in implementing its objectives and ideas. This has given the organization leverage support to come up with new participatory strategies. It is currently registered organization with MCDMCH.
ORGANIZATIONAL OBJECTIVE
To promote youth entrepreneurship and innovation
To promote keep Zambia clean campaign
To promote the fight against early marriages
To promote environmental protection
To promote individual counseling.
To issue based and educational research
To promote voter education and transparency.
To create a friendly and conducive platform.
THE ACTIVITIES OF THE ORGANISATION
Conduct voluntary general cleaning by youths across communities.
FYRS believes that a clean environment is a safe. Research has proved that an environment that endagers human civilization is capable of attracting diseases. Many alternatives have been implemented that are not sustainable. It’s in this light that FYRS seeks to implement sustainable solutions that can help mitigate the crisis of careless garbage deposition. FYRS always invites youths from various sects of society to come on board and reach out to the community through sensitization and other means of outreach. It is to this effect that FYRS plans to adopt various ideas that youths have in order to change mindsets of individuals through garbage preservation. FYRS also engages other organization to come up with recycle programs.
Provide research proposals and research projects on specific subjects that affect the developmental growth of youths.
FYRS using various means of youth engagement, it has conducted researches that have largely contributed to the body of knowledge. For instance research topics that relate to health and youths have being conducted. For instance early pregnancy, early marriages, abortion and HIV, and many other topics that affect youths in particular. Other areas of interest that FYRS has taken keen interest include; environmental health, civic awareness, demographic statistics of youth unemployment, voters education, Abuse of drugs, and many other researchable areas of interest.
Organizing workshop and seminars
FYRS has always taken an innovative stance in creating an interactive platform that allows youths to communicate to each other. FYRS always makes sure that it provides a responsive environment that accommodates all classes of youths through workshops. The seminars that FYRS organizes make sure that its objectives are met through action oriented and capacity building platform for youths. In the past few years FYRS has conducted workshops and seminars that enhance skills among youths. Skills such as advocacy skills, lobby skills, entrepreneurship seminars, monitor and evaluation lessons, motivational lectures, think tank meetings, group discussions, public speaking trainings, health education, community development initiatives, participatory approaches, youth mobilization, employment education, practical survival skills and many more other classical lessons that help youths across countries.
To organize voluntary counseling.
FYRS has always considered counseling as an important element in the building of youths. This is because studies has shown FYRS that majority of youths lack counseling in various sectors of life, and this greatly affects their decisions during their adult life. FYRS, therefor organizes competent counselors that help youths critically examine there long life decisions. FYRS has in the past few years organized several counseling sessions that have yielded remarkable results. FYRS has inculcated three types of counseling process, such as carrier guidance, educational guidance, and personality guidance. Incorporating with other organizations, FYRS has always desired to work with other organization that provides psycho social counseling trainings. This has greatly helped youths to know themselves and improve their personalities, greatly contributed to the way they help one another combat daily challenges.
To organize meetings and conferences.
FYRS has employed various methods of involving stakeholders, these conferences meetings have contributed in reaching out to a broader and rich audience. Our organization realizes that it is impossible to implement change among youths if we do not hold constant meetings and talks with government organizations that can help FYRS fulfill its objectives.
To participate in the formulation and revision of government policies.
FYRS has always taken a keen interest in policies that affect youths across the country. Through positive critical analysis, FYRS has engaged youths to publish articles on various issues that affect them. Activities that have being more prominent are monitoring elections and examining educational policies. FYRS has managed doing these tasks by holding lectures, sensitizing youths on civic activities, applying voters education and citizenship awareness.
This has not been an easy task for FYRS to achieve over the past years. Nevertheless, FYRS has managed improving youth participation in decisional making offices and conducting public debates on government decision.
To maintain the activities that is in line with our objective for the furtherance of the organization vision and mission.
FYRS has done nothing without considering its vision and mission in any activity. “Vision” is the voicing the voice of the youths and “mission” is youth engagement by changing mindsets.
FYRS as a non-governmental organization always endeavor to carry its motto “Changing Mindsets” top on its banner.
To involve youth participation in Voluntary community work
Involving youths in community work has always been FYRS’s desire. By youths and for youths, the organization has always used youths as a means to reach out to a broader population. FYRS has always believed the zealous abilities of youths to help our crippled society. Hence, we have recognized that youths brought together can achieve remarkable results. Unfortunate, youths within our community have always been used for other vices; hence FYRS always ensures that it fully uses the full potential that youths possess.
