Zambian Governance Foundation The Zambian Governance Foundation for civil society (ZGF) was registered in 2009 as a company limited by guarantee.

: A Zambian society where local communities realise their rights & shape their own development.

: To strengthen local communities and civil society capacities to unlock & utilise available & untapped resources for sustainable development. Since 2010, ZGF has supported 163 organisations, ranging from well-established CSOs, emerging CSOs to community-based organisations across all provinces of Zambia, through a total of 213 grants awarded. It has built relationships with an estimated 400 CSOs over the past 13 years, including grantees, and beneficiaries of training and scoping exercises, organisational capacity assessments, as well as learning and information sharing events. In 2017, community philanthropy emerged as a new pillar of work following our exposure to the concept of community philanthropy promoted by the Global Fund for Community Foundations in 2016. We considered the promotion of local philanthropy a natural progression from our past engagement and experience with CBOs. With this addition to our programme, we mutated from a dedicated civil society support organisation to one that also works directly with communities as an implementing organisation. Since then, we have been active in two strands of work, namely supporting civil society development - an area ZGF is most known for – and community philanthropy, the new component added to our programme portfolio in 2017. Today, ZGF is working in three communities located in the peri-urban areas of Lusaka, and in four rural communities in Chisamba, Chibombo, Rufunsa and Luangwa districts.

This week, ZGF Board members embarked on a familiarisation visit to our partners in Eastern Province, providing an opportunity to engage with the Community Foundations and CSOs , understand their work and exchange experiences.

Yesterday, the team visited Kaluluzi Community Foundation, where the engagement created an opportunity for foundation members to learn from the Board members’ knowledge and experience.

Discussions also touched on the foundation’s income generating activities, including its grocery shop, with Board members sharing practical advice on business management and sustainability.

Such engagements create valuable opportunities for knowledge sharing, mentorship and reflection, helping community foundations strengthen their operations and explore ways to sustain their work using locally available resources.

In this week’s edition of the ZGF Newsflash, we spotlight Freval Mission, a Kabwe based organisation tackling educational exclusion by creating opportunities for children, young people and adults who have been left behind.

From children rebuilding their lives through education and practical skills to adults returning to the classroom later in life, we explore how the organisation is turning second chances into pathways to independence and a brighter future.

Meet the 64 year old woman who went from learning to hold a pencil to passing her Grade 7 examinations and progressing to secondary school. Her journey is a powerful reminder that the opportunity to learn should never be limited by age or circumstance.

Team ZGF is coming together for the Quarterly Review Meeting, creating space to reflect on progress, assess achievements, discuss challenges and draw lessons from the past quarter.
The review provides an opportunity to take stock of our work, strengthen collaboration and identify areas that require renewed focus as we move into the final quarter of the year.
Meaningful progress requires more than looking at what has been accomplished. It also calls for honest reflection on what can be improved and how we can work more effectively towards our shared goals of strengthening communities and civil society for sustainable development.

We’re pleased to be part of the global community behind Charities Aid Foundation’s World Giving Report 2026: Charity Insights.

The report shows that while 56% of charities consider the sector in their country to be healthy, funding remains a key challenge for eight in ten. It also finds that 92% believe funders could do more to support them beyond providing money.

The findings offer charities, funders and policymakers an opportunity to listen, learn and work together to strengthen the conditions in which civil society can thrive.

COMMUNITY FOUNDATIONS FAIR & STRATEGIC PLAN LAUNCH🥳🥳

Today, community foundations, civil society organisations and partners are coming together for the Community Foundations Fair and Strategic Plan Launch, under the theme “Showcasing Community Power in Action.”

The Fair provides a platform for community foundations to showcase the work they are leading in their communities, share their experiences, connect with partners and demonstrate how local knowledge, resources and leadership can drive meaningful change.

A key highlight of the day is the launch of strategic plans developed by the community foundations, setting out their priorities, aspirations and direction for the years ahead. These plans reflect their commitment to strengthening locally led development and building on the resources and strengths within their communities.

Today is a celebration of community leadership in action and a reminder that sustainable development becomes stronger when communities have the space and power to shape their own solutions.

What an interesting week it has been, truly.

has been in the field this week and we are visiting our Catalyst Fund partners in Eastern and Central provinces.

We are deeply inspired by the work that they are doing in their communities. Some of these partners are supporting GBV survivors, others vulnerable children, while some continue to address the devastating effects of climate change.
