Zambian Governance Foundation

Zambian Governance Foundation The Zambian Governance Foundation for civil society (ZGF) was registered in 2009 as a company limited by guarantee.

: A Zambian society where local communities realise their rights & shape their own development.

: To strengthen local communities and civil society capacities to unlock & utilise available & untapped resources for sustainable development. Since 2010, ZGF has supported 163 organisations, ranging from well-established CSOs, emerging CSOs to community-based organisations across all p

rovinces of Zambia, through a total of 213 grants awarded. It has built relationships with an estimated 400 CSOs over the past 13 years, including grantees, and beneficiaries of training and scoping exercises, organisational capacity assessments, as well as learning and information sharing events. In 2017, community philanthropy emerged as a new pillar of work following our exposure to the concept of community philanthropy promoted by the Global Fund for Community Foundations in 2016. We considered the promotion of local philanthropy a natural progression from our past engagement and experience with CBOs. With this addition to our programme, we mutated from a dedicated civil society support organisation to one that also works directly with communities as an implementing organisation. Since then, we have been active in two strands of work, namely supporting civil society development - an area ZGF is most known for – and community philanthropy, the new component added to our programme portfolio in 2017. Today, ZGF is working in three communities located in the peri-urban areas of Lusaka, and in four rural communities in Chisamba, Chibombo, Rufunsa and Luangwa districts.

What happens when communities are repeatedly consulted, engaged, surveyed, and invited into discussions, yet see little visible or lasting change?

Our latest Newsflash explores the hidden fatigue that can emerge when participation becomes repetitive rather than meaningful.

This week, we reflect on community engagement and why development work must move beyond activity toward genuine partnership and lasting impact. Plus news for and from civil society and many more!

This Labour Day, we reflect on the theme “Ensuring safety and health at work in a changing climate.”

For many communities, climate change is already reshaping livelihoods especially for those in agriculture, informal work and other climate-exposed sectors. Protecting workers today means recognising these realities and strengthening systems that keep people safe, supported, and resilient.

At the Zambian Governance Foundation , we continue to support community-led initiatives that promote sustainable livelihoods and place people at the centre of development.

Happy Labour Day!!🇿🇲💪🏾.

Today we welcomed our third cohort of youth groups for an orientation training, marking the beginning of their journey in building and strengthening youth enterprises.

The session focused on equipping them with the knowledge, tools and understanding needed to develop sustainable ventures that respond to opportunities within their communities.

A new partnership unlocked!

is pleased to partner with the Keno Institute of Training and Research to strengthen our commitment to locally led development.

Through this collaboration, we will deliver demand-driven organisational strengthening support to our CSO partners under the Shifting the Power programme. This means that our partners will receive tailored support based on their specific needs, priorities and growth journeys.

We look forward to the impact this partnership will unlock.

As we commemorate Kenneth Kaunda Day, we reflect on the life and legacy of Kenneth Kaunda, whose leadership was grounded in unity, integrity and a deep commitment to the people of Zambia.

His values continue to challenge us to build a society where governance is inclusive, participation is meaningful and every voice is heard.
As ZGF, we continue to build on these principles by supporting systems that empower citizens, strengthen community participation and promote inclusive development.

It’s no coincidence that International Seed Day and World Intellectual Property Day fall on the same date.

Today we celebrate seeds – but under UPOV 91, intellectual property law is used to patent life. Minor modifications turn ancestral seeds developed by generations of farmers into exclusive corporate assets. This is biopiracy.

Zambia’s current Plant Breeders Rights Act (2007) already balances breeders’ rights with farmers’ rights. We don’t need UPOV 91.

Happy International Seed Day! Today we celebrate the foundation of our food, our culture, and our future. But in Zambia, that future is under threat.

Two proposed bills aim to replace our current seed laws with UPOV 91 – a system that criminalises farmers, legalises biopiracy and hands control to a handful of corporations.

We say NO!
