ZUFIAW

ZUFIAW ZUFIAW is the union of choice for workers in the finance, banking, building societies, pension funds, insurance & all financial-related institutions in Zambia.

Established in 1970 as the Zambia Union of Bank Officials (ZUBO), ZUFIAW has a membership of 4,000 drawn from 28 institutions. ZUFIAW is affiliated to the Federation of Free Trade Unions of Zambia (FFTUZ) and UNI Global Union. With 52% of its membership being male and 48% female, ZUFIAW has a strong commitment to gender equality. At its last Congress in 2006, the union scored a first by achieving

70% women’s representation – a record in the labour movement locally and regionally. ZUFIAW is currently headed by Mr. Kasapo Kabende who was elected as General Secretary at the 13th Quadrennial Conference held at Mike Convention Center Lusaka in December 2021. With the motto “Workers’ First” ZUFIAW is advancing the interests of workers at every decision-making level, and building partnerships with civil society and the community. In 2002, ZUFIAW spearheaded a “Save Our Parastatals” campaign which ensured that Zambians retained ownership of the national commercial bank, ZANACO, that was privatised. This saved thousand jobs and maintained banking services in rural areas. In 2003 ZUFIAW coordinated a protest action and petitioned the government on “Child Sexual Abuse & Defilement” an action that led to the stiffening of legislation on child s*x offenders and defilement. In 2003 the union won the Best Labour Management Partnership Award for their successful partnership on HIV/AIDS with the National Pension Scheme (NAPSA). In the same year, ZUFIAW was the only trade union appointed to sit on the Constitutional Review Commission. Global competition has brought about a downward pressure on workers’ rights. ZUFIAW has risen to this challenge by organising workers and empowering them with a voice at the workplace. As ZUFIAW we have continued to put “workers first” because development is about people! Our Vision
To be the best banking, finance and insurance trade union in the country that is continuously improving working the conditions and welfare of our members and their families. Objectives

Promote jobs, justice and fairness by participating actively in national issues. Organise, educate and represent workers in our sectors. Regulate working conditions and wages through collective bargaining. Promote harmonious industrial relations. Promote equality between men and women in the sharing of the national wealth.

Today, ZUFIAW joins the rest of Africa in commemorating Africa Freedom Day under the theme: “Assuring Sustainable Water Availability and Safe Sanitation Systems to Achieve the Goals of Agenda 2063.”

This theme reminds us that Africa’s development must be built on dignity, health, equality, and sustainable access to essential services. Water and sanitation are not only basic human needs; they are foundations for decent work, productivity, public health, and social justice.

As a union, ZUFIAW believes that no worker, family, or community should be left behind. A truly borderless and united Africa must ensure that every person has access to safe water, proper sanitation, and working conditions that protect life and dignity.

On this Africa Freedom Day, we celebrate the strength of African workers and reaffirm our commitment to unity, solidarity, and a continent where progress knows no borders.

Fragmented unions have always had a weaker voice at the negotiating table. Unity strengthens collective bargaining, improves representation, and gives workers a stronger platform to defend their rights and interests.

As a leading voice for workers’ rights in the financial sector, ZUFIAW remains committed to fighting for better wages, fair compensation, and improved working conditions.

Join ZUFIAW today and be part of a stronger, united movement for workers.
