Transparency International Zambia Transparency International Zambia is a local chapter of the international anti-corruption movement
(1)

Transparency International Zambia (TI-Z) has been in existence since June 2000 and in January 2001 was registered under Registration Number 46295 as a 'Company limited by guarantee' with the Registrar of Companies. From 2001 when TI-Z was formally registered, the Organisation achieved a ten year existence of its operations in Zambia. In May 1993, the global civil society movement, Transparency Int

ernational (TI), was born. Having seen at first hand, the damage being caused by corruption in international business transactions, Peter Eigen, a former high-ranking World Bank official, formed the organization with an exclusive focus on fighting corruption and building integrity. Since then, TI has expanded all over the globe, encouraging formation of national chapters. TI as at 2011 has over 100 TI chapters in 100 countries that are all affiliated to the TI movement. TI promotes common values to be adhered to by all its chapters and a three year assessment is done to all chapters. In Zambia, the TI chapter underwent this accreditation process and due to satisfactory performance and compliance, its affiliation was renewed for another three years. This assessment guarantees that TI gives another three year mandate to continue operating as a chapter. If a chapter fails to meet the basic minimum standards, it is disaccredited and stops operating under the TI brand name. This assessment includes financial management, programme management and internal governance operations of a chapter. TI Zambia went through this assessment in 2009 and was found to have sound practices. TI-Z abides by the guiding principles of Transparency International globally but has adopted its own vision, mission and core values to guide its operations and these are highlighted below:

Organisational Objectives
The main goal of TI Zambia is to contribute to the reduction of corruption in Zambia through the following general organisational objectives:

To effectively and efficiently play the role of a watchdog institution against corruption as well as be catalytic in the promotion of integrity and good governance in Zambia;
To promote constructive debate and dialogue among various actors on the issue of corruption, good governance and integrity in Zambia;
To develop sustainable coalitions for the purposes of joint action and enhance information sharing among various stakeholders;
To develop the organisational and human capacities of various actors to effectively deal with issues of corruption, good governance and integrity.

Transparency International Zambia participated in the commemoration of World Press Freedom Day 2026 in Zambia, which brought together regional and national stakeholders to reflect on the state of media freedom, journalist safety, and democratic accountability.

Our Communications Officer Ms. Zanji Sinkala moderated a panel co-hosted by Consortium of Ethiopian Human Rights Organizations, Good Governance Africa and UNESCO on strengthening legal defense systems, strategic litigation, and complementary accountability frameworks to better protect journalists facing legal and institutional risks.

The conversations underscored the urgent need for stronger protections for journalists and a collective commitment to defending press freedom as a cornerstone of transparency, human rights, and democratic governance.

Companies, luxury real estate investments, and offshore bank accounts are among the key channels frequently exploited.
A Transparency International analysis unpacks the complex mechanisms, financial instruments, and preferred offshore jurisdictions that enable corrupt actors to conceal and launder billions of dollars misappropriated from public funds across Africa, tracing how illicit wealth is moved, disguised, and integrated into the global financial system.

At Transparency International Zambia, we recognise the hard work, resilience and dedication of workers across all sectors who continue to drive Zambia’s development.

From frontline workers to those behind the scenes, your contribution matters. But beyond celebration, today is also a reminder: decent work must be matched with integrity, fairness and accountability in how opportunities, resources and systems are managed.

A stronger Zambia is built on both hard work and honest systems.
Happy Labour Day!

On 27 April 2026, Transparency International Zambia (TI Z) held an introductory meeting with Zambia National Commercial Bank (Zanaco) to explore collaboration under the Public Participation and Oversight (PPO) Initiative.

The initiative is part of the Climate Governance Integrity Programme, supported by the Waverley Street Foundation through the Transparency International Secretariat.
The initiative is anchored within TI Z’s Climate Change, Environment, and Sustainability Programme and seeks to partner with Zanaco in its role as a Direct Access Entity to the Green Climate Fund.

The work will involve TI Z assessing the extent to which Zanaco provides meaningful opportunities for public participation and facilitates effective public or civil society oversight of its climate finance projects and activities.

Through this partnership, TI Z looks forward to a constructive and collaborative process focused on learning, knowledge sharing, and continuous improvement.

As part of this collaboration, TI Z envisages working with Zanaco to strengthen transparency, institutional commitment, accessibility, inclusion, and accountability in climate finance processes.

Participation in the Carter Center Dialogue on women participation in politics
On Wednesday, 15th April 2026, Transparency International Zambia participated in the second session of the “Ending Barriers to Women’s Participation in Politics” convening.

The event brought together women political leaders, government representatives, civil society actors, traditional and faith leaders, and allies to share experiences on barriers to women’s political participation and explore strategies and accountability mechanisms to address them.

It was coordinated by the Carter Center Dialogue in collaboration with the Non-Governmental Gender Organizations’ Coordinating Council (NGOCC), Young Women in Action, and the Zambian National Women’s Lobby.

The session focused on addressing sociocultural and educational barriers, raising awareness, and equipping participants with tools to challenge harmful norms and promote inclusive participation.

His Royal Higness Paramount Chief Monze emphasized the need for equal opportunities for both boys and girls and encouraged early support from the household and community to push for women’s participation in politics.
Another key issue discussed was the Grade 12 certificate requirement for aspiring candidates.

This was illustrated by a female aspiring candidate who returned to school later in life, studying alongside learners nearly the age of her grandchildren to meet the educational requirement for political participation and later scored a Councilor position. The Ministry of Education also shared various initiatives at national, district and community level to emphasize the support provide gy government to women to ensure they meet this requirement.

Key takeaways included the importance of individual empowerment to overcome sociocultural barriers and the recognition of education as a critical equalizer, with stakeholders urged to promote women’s education and participation in politics at all levels. Representing TI-Z was our Environmental Governance Officer Sandie Sikazwe

Voter Education Materials Validation workshop: 16th – 18th April 2026

Following the review and development of Voter Education materials from 2nd to 8th March 2026, aimed at integrating recent constitutional and electoral process changes ahead of the 2026 General Elections, the Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ) convened a validation workshop to quality assure the materials developed.

The validation meeting was held from 16th to 18th April 2026 at the Reddy Convention Centre in Chilanga District and brought together members of the National Voter Education Committee (NVEC) and Voter Education Trainers.

Our Citizens Engagement Officer Mr. Patrick Bwalya participated in the workshop in his capacity as a NVEC member, contributing to the review of the content, messaging, and illustrations contained in the voter education materials.

The exercise focused on ensuring that the materials are accurate, clear, and consistent with the Constitution, electoral laws, and the main voter education programme. The materials validated included the Voter Education Facilitators’ Handbook, Facilitators’ Guide, educational charts, brochures, flyers, and posters.

Following this activity, the next phase of the programme will be the training of voter educators, who will be equipped to use the validated materials to deliver standardized voter education to voters across the country.

TI-Z is pleased to attend the 2026 Accelerated Women’s Political Participation & Leadership Conference at Mulungushi International Conference Centre.

The discussions have brought together voices from political parties, civil society, academia, youth movements and women’s rights organisations to reflect on what it will take to build more inclusive political spaces ahead of the 2026 elections.

Key sessions have highlighted the current status of women in politics, the role of media, innovation and technology in shaping public narratives, and the importance of intergenerational dialogue in advancing gender equality.

At TI-Z, we recognise that meaningful participation of women in politics is central to strengthening accountability, representation and democratic governance. Creating space is not enough — systems must work for women to participate fully and safely.

We commend UNDP Zambia, Non-governmental Gender Organisations' Coordinating Council and partners for convening this important platform. Representing TI-Z at the conference is our Board Member Ms. Janet Mundando and our Communications Officer, Ms. Zanji Sinkala.
