IMPARTING WILLPOWER THROUGH SPORT
EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
PLUSPORT is a youth-led nonprofit making sport for peace and development organization which uses the power of the “language” of sport to educate on two thematic areas: Civic Education and Social Development respectively. PluSPORT was initiated by McMillan Griffins MASANGA – A community peer leader, pediatric and psychosocial counselor, Korfball
Coach, ICT specialist – in November 2012. The organization’s initiation was driven by his firsthand experiences and observations during his then 4 years involvement in voluntary community/social work, that in spite of the information youths received on sexual health, gender based violence, and the cries and petitions of government and stakeholder on political/electoral violence, little change was observed compared to the amount of work input, hence, making the notion “knowledge is power” futile. develop a way through sport activities to educate on principles of democracy; 2. develop a way through sport activities to educate children on their rights, responsibilities, and basic health education; and 3. to formulating a practical way to enhance the levels of knowledge application by project beneficiaries. PluSPORT was then established not just to educate the youths who already have the “knowledge”, but primarily imparting willpower. The programmes and approach were to be impact-based, and not just information dissemination. To make the ideas programmatic and legal, PluSPORT got legally registered in April 2014.
