In a bold move toward a sustainable future, Zambia has officially launched its National Carbon Registry. Spearheaded by the Zambia Environmental Management Agency (ZEMA) under the Ministry of Green Economy and Environment - Zambia this new positions the nation at the forefront of global carbon market transparency and climate action. Custom-built to align with Article 6 of the Paris Agreement and integrated into the national Monitoring, Reporting, and Verification (iMRV) system, this digital platform provides the infrastructure required to track, manage, and account for Internationally Transferred Mitigation Outcomes (ITMOs) while strictly preventing double counting.
Aligning with global carbon market standards is critical for Zambia to unlock high-integrity climate finance to bridge its multi-billion-dollar NDC implementation gap. Without a credible, standardized registry, host nations risk overselling carbon assets or facing market devaluation; this platform gives global investors, sovereign partners such as Norway, Sweden, Switzerland, and Singapore and project developers the legal, technical, and digital certainty needed to commit long-term capital to renewable energy, forestry, and sustainable development.
Supported globally by the SPAR6C programme alongside partners like Global Green Growth Institute (GGGI), UN Environment Programme Copenhagen Climate Centre, and GFA Consulting Group, the registry cements Zambia’s position as an African leader in transparent climate governance. However, the true test lies in implementation ensuring exacting data verification, protecting community rights, and translating regulatory frameworks into measurable, long-term climate impact on the ground.
