DAY 1 | CONSULTATIVE STAKEHOLDER DIALOGUE

The Inters*x Society of Zambia - ISSZ commenced its two-day Consultative Stakeholder Dialogue (Human Rights Training) for inters*x persons and parents in Lusaka.

The first day created a space for participants to build a deeper understanding of inters*x and human rights, while reflecting on the realities faced by inters*x persons and their families.

Discussions explored what inters*x means, addressed common misconceptions, and strengthened participants’ understanding of inters*x as a natural biological variation. The programme also highlighted the important role of parents and families in understanding, supporting and protecting the rights and dignity of inters*x children.

Participants were given an opportunity to share their lived experiences and challenges, bringing forward issues affecting inters*x persons and families.

The day also featured contributions from key stakeholders, including the Human Rights Commission- Zambia, a Legal Consultant, and a representative from the The Ministry Of Home Affairs and Internal Security,who shared perspectives relevant to human rights, legal identity and access to national identity documentation.

Overall, Day 1 was an important opportunity for learning, dialogue, reflection and experience-sharing, laying a foundation for the consultations and discussions to continue on Day 2.

There are more than 40 known inters*x variations.

Inters*x variations can involve differences in:

1: Chromosomes — for example, XX, XY, XXY, or other chromosome patterns.
2: Hormones — the body may produce different levels of s*x hormones.
3: Hormone response — the body may not respond to certain hormones in the usual way.
4: Internal reproductive organs — these may develop differently from typical male or female patterns.
5: External ge***alia — ge***al development may differ from what is typically considered male or female.
6: Go**ds — the te**es or ovaries may develop differently, or there may be differences in their location or function.

Inters*x variations can look very different from one person to another. Some are noticed at birth, while others may only be discovered during puberty, medical investigations, or sometimes much later in life.Inters*x is a natural biological variation in s*x characteristics.
