Africa Directions

Africa Directions Africa Directions (AD) is a youth-led national non-governmental, non-profit making organization that EXECUTIVE SUMMARY BACKGROUND OF AFRICA DIRECTIONS.

Africa Direction (AD) was conceptualized by four Zambian youths in 2000, as part of the response to the growing HIV epidemic in Mtendere, a high density area in the eastern part of Lusaka. The project was motivated by the increase in HIV incidence amongst youth aged between 17 and 19 years. Recognizing that the motivating factors of HIV incidence amongst the youth was a lack of recreational activi

ties, transactional s*x and little or no reproductive health education, AD was established to provide children and youth with information, recreational and sporting facilities and empower them with life skills to prevent new HIV infections. AD focuses on the dissemination of s*xual and reproductive health information using a variety of evidence based communication methodologies, the provision of s*xual and reproductive health (SRH) services including Voluntary Counselling and Testing (VCT) and capacity development for children and youth through life skills and entrepreneurship skills training. AD is renowned for the use of arts, recreational activities and sports as an entry point to engagement with young people on matters of health. THE STRATEGIC PLAN 2014 – 2019, this document presents the strategic direction for AD (2014 – 2019), which is shared by AD staff, its Advisory Board, stakeholders and beneficiaries. The primary purpose of the Strategic Plan 2014 - 2019 is to provide a roadmap for those managing the prioritizing of AD’s interventions and mobilizing resources. The Strategic Plan 2014 – 2019 was developed through a participatory process of self-assessment and draws on an evaluation of the previous strategic plan 2011 – 2013, with a focus on the reformulation of AD’s goal and objectives. The self-assessment and the evaluation interrogated AD’s program implementation, the effectiveness of key strategies employed and the challenges experienced during implementation of the strategic plan 2011 - 2013.

We were engaged by Peace Corps Zambia to train volunteers from the United States together with their Zambian counterparts from various districts during the HIV/Health Project Design & Management Workshop in Mansa, Luapula Province.

Our focus was on HIV/AIDS and malaria, using Participatory Theatre for Change as an innovative tool to communicate, educate, and inspire local action. This approach goes beyond performance—it is a community-driven process that sparks dialogue, surfaces challenges, and co‑creates grassroots solutions with communities, not for them.

As consultants, we are proud to have facilitated this transformative experience, reaffirming our commitment to harnessing creativity for social change.

✨ Special thanks to Peace Corps Zambia for entrusting Africa Directions with this important work. Together, we continue to use theatre as a catalyst for healthier, more empowered communities.
