Africa Directions Africa Directions (AD) is a youth-led national non-governmental, non-profit making organization that EXECUTIVE SUMMARY BACKGROUND OF AFRICA DIRECTIONS.

Africa Direction (AD) was conceptualized by four Zambian youths in 2000, as part of the response to the growing HIV epidemic in Mtendere, a high density area in the eastern part of Lusaka. The project was motivated by the increase in HIV incidence amongst youth aged between 17 and 19 years. Recognizing that the motivating factors of HIV incidence amongst the youth was a lack of recreational activi

ties, transactional s*x and little or no reproductive health education, AD was established to provide children and youth with information, recreational and sporting facilities and empower them with life skills to prevent new HIV infections. AD focuses on the dissemination of s*xual and reproductive health information using a variety of evidence based communication methodologies, the provision of s*xual and reproductive health (SRH) services including Voluntary Counselling and Testing (VCT) and capacity development for children and youth through life skills and entrepreneurship skills training. AD is renowned for the use of arts, recreational activities and sports as an entry point to engagement with young people on matters of health. THE STRATEGIC PLAN 2014 – 2019, this document presents the strategic direction for AD (2014 – 2019), which is shared by AD staff, its Advisory Board, stakeholders and beneficiaries. The primary purpose of the Strategic Plan 2014 - 2019 is to provide a roadmap for those managing the prioritizing of AD’s interventions and mobilizing resources. The Strategic Plan 2014 – 2019 was developed through a participatory process of self-assessment and draws on an evaluation of the previous strategic plan 2011 – 2013, with a focus on the reformulation of AD’s goal and objectives. The self-assessment and the evaluation interrogated AD’s program implementation, the effectiveness of key strategies employed and the challenges experienced during implementation of the strategic plan 2011 - 2013.

Empowering Communities Through Participatory Theatre for Change 🎭🌍

Last week, the Africa Directions team had the privilege of traveling to Chipata, Eastern Province, where we facilitated a Participatory Theatre for Change (PTC) training at Kagunda Mini Hospital.

This impactful initiative was organized by the incredible Peace Corps Volunteer from the United States 🇺🇸, India Rose Carson, whose commitment to strengthening community-led health interventions made this training possible.

During the workshop, we trained Peer Educators and healthcare staff in the Participatory Theatre for Change methodology—a powerful approach that uses theatre as a tool for dialogue, reflection, and collective action. Equipped with these skills, participants will now lead community engagements to address HIV-related stigma and promote better nutrition for people living with HIV, fostering healthier, more informed, and more inclusive communities.

At Africa Directions, we believe that sustainable change begins when communities are empowered to tell their own stories, confront their own challenges, and create their own solutions.

A heartfelt thank you to India Rose Carson, the Kagunda Mini Hospital team, and every participant for your passion, enthusiasm, and commitment to creating lasting impact.

Together, we continue using the power of theatre to transform lives.

Inspiring the Next Generation Through Music, Mentorship & Motivation ✨🇿🇲

We were honored to host the North Carolina National Guard for an inspiring and interactive session with our young people. Through music, conversations, question-and-answer sessions, and words of motivation, they encouraged our youths to chase their dreams, believe in themselves, and never give up despite life’s challenges.

The engagement was impactful, uplifting, and truly memorable for everyone present.

A special thank you to the U.S. Embassy for making this amazing visit possible. We deeply appreciate the opportunity to connect, learn, and grow together.

Moments like these remind us that inspiration, unity, and purpose have no borders. 🇺🇸

Earlier this week, we were honored to host the Anti-Corruption Commission for an insightful routine engagement session focused on understanding corruption, its effects on communities, and the collective role we all play in preventing and fighting it.

At Africa Directions, we believe that awareness, integrity, and active citizenship are key in building a transparent and accountable society. We appreciate the valuable discussions and knowledge shared during the session, which continue to empower young people and communities to stand against corruption in all its forms.

Together, we can promote honesty, accountability, and positive change for a better Zambia. 🇿🇲

🌍✨ Empowering Young People to Lead Change ✨🌍

Africa Directions, with support from KinderNotHilfe (KNH), successfully conducted a Peer Education Training for adolescents and young people using the Life Skills and Health Education Manual.

The training equipped participants with essential knowledge and practical skills in Life Skills and Sexual Reproductive Health and Rights (SRHR), enabling them to confidently serve as peer educators and advocates within their schools and communities.

We are proud of these young leaders who are now prepared to inspire positive behaviour, promote healthy living, and become agents of change among their peers.

Together, we continue investing in empowered, informed, and resilient communities for a brighter future. 💙

Africa Directions alumni Esther Phiri and David "Sniper" Mwale — two of Zambia’s most prominent boxers.

As Africa Directions, it gives us pride to see that providing a space for young people does more than offer recreation — it shapes careers and helps them become who they want to be.

This is a very encouraging photo. To all young people out there, let this be motivation: your background doesn’t matter. If you work hard, stay focused, and have a platform, you can do wonders.

Only the sky is the limit.
