Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung Zambia Office

Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung Zambia Office Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung Zambia Office Friedrich Ebert Foundation opened its first representation in Zambia in the mid-sixties, shortly after independence.

Civic education, research in socio-economic matters, support of trade unions, small scale industries and democratic organisations were the areas of operation. Despite Zambia's positive developments, many challenges still remain. Today, the work of FES in Zambia is focused on democratic statehood, political participation and social justice. Believing in a principal functioning of Zambian democracy,

we think that the major deficit of this democracy is the lack of checks and balances. Vices in the political system, like corruption and misuse of public funds, the failing of implementation of important policies and programs, the instability of political parties etc., result from an executive, which is not properly monitored and controlled in its activities. The FES works together with various socio political actors – governmental, civil society and international institutions, in order to engage in the further development of the democratic standards and to promote a socially just economic and social policy.

STRENGTHENING WOMEN AND YOUTH LEADERSHIP IN TRADE UNIONS ✊🙂
The month of May has continued to be engaging and impactful for Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung Zambia Office.

On the 21st and 22nd of May 2026, Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung Zambia Office in partnership with the Zambia Congress Of Trade Unions - ZCTU successfully held a workshop focused on strengthening women and youth leadership in trade unions under the theme “From Representation to Influence: Women and Youth in Trade Union Leadership.”

The workshop created a platform for dialogue on gender parity, inclusion and institutional strengthening within trade unions. Participants discussed the importance of increasing women and youth participation in leadership spaces and promoting democratic and representative trade union structures.

Creating inclusive leadership spaces within trade unions remains key in advancing gender justice, social justice and democratic participation in Zambia. 🤝✊🙂

Across Sub-Saharan Africa, platform work is transforming labour markets, creating new income opportunities, but also new forms of worker insecurity. Zambia is no exception.

From transport and delivery to e-commerce and freelance services, platform workers now play a critical role in sustaining the digital economy. Yet many continue to face unstable earnings, long working hours, weak social protection, and limited labour rights.

The future of work cannot be built on innovation alone. It must also be built on fairness, accountability, and dignity.

Platform workers are central to economic growth and urban service delivery. Their contribution must be matched by stronger protections, representation, and policy reform.

ECONOMIC JUSTICE FORUM

The Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung Zambia Office in partnership with the Centre for Trade Policy and Development (CTPD), Jesuit Centre for Theological Reflection (JCTR), and Consumer Unity Trust Society - CUTS Lusaka convened the Economic Justice Forum under the theme, "Geo-Political Global Initiatives: The Case of the European Union (EU) Global Gateway - Challenges and Opportunities for Zambia."

MEDIA COVERAGE AND THE 2026 GENERAL ELECTIONS

As Zambia approaches the 2026 General Elections, the role of the media in promoting credible, balanced and issue-based reporting remains critical in strengthening democratic governance.

It is against this background that the Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung Zambia Office convened a Media Dialogue Forum which brought together journalists, media practitioners, and governance stakeholders to discuss media coverage ahead of the elections. The forum was held in Lusaka on the 4th of May 2026.

The forum created an important platform for participants to reflect on the responsibilities of the media in promoting ethical journalism, professionalism, accurate reporting, and peaceful electoral processes. The discussions also addressed key concerns around misinformation, political polarisation, media independence, and the need for conflict-sensitive reporting during the election period.

The dialogue was highly interactive, with journalists openly sharing their experiences, challenges, and concerns regarding election coverage in Zambia. These engagements contribute to strengthening discussions on how media can enhance public trust, promote informed citizen participation, and contribute to credible and peaceful elections in 2026.

HONORING KK 🙌🏾

Today, we celebrate KK Day in honor of Kenneth Kaunda, Zambia’s founding President and a symbol of unity, peace, and humanism. His leadership laid the foundation for a nation built on the principles of “One Zambia, One Nation,” transcending ethnic and regional differences.

Kaunda’s vision reminds us that unity is not automatic—it is something we must actively nurture through dialogue, inclusion, and solidarity. As we reflect on his legacy, may we recommit ourselves to building a more just, peaceful, and united Zambia for all.

KITWE URBAN DEVELOPMENT FORUM
THE LOBITO CORRIDOR, INFRASTRUCTURE AND URBAN TRANSFORMATION

Zambia’s strategic location in Southern Africa, places Kitwe at the heart of regional trade, and urban transformation opportunities. The development of the Lobito Corridor, connecting Zambia and the Democratic Republic of Congo to the Atlantic port of Lobito in Angola, represents a transformative infrastructure and trade initiative with far-reaching implications for industrial, economic diversification, and urban development.
For cities such as Kitwe, the Lobito Corridor is not only a trade and transport project but also a catalyst for urban infrastructure development, spatial transformation, job creation, social, and economic development.
However, maximizing these benefits requires deliberate planning, strong institutional coordination, inclusive urban development policies, resilient, infrastructure development that respond to social, and economic justice values.

The Kitwe Urban Development Forum, that took place 5th March 2026, was strategically set to ask pertinent questions and contribute to the global discussion on the Lobito corridor, infrastructure and urban transformation.
