UG Launches Campaign for a Corruption-Free Service

The Zambia Union of Government and Allied Workers has launched the Campaign for a Corruption-Free Service (CCFS), an initiative currently being conducted in various institutions.

The Union has acknowledged the Government’s continued efforts in combating corruption in public offices. However, it emphasizes that the fight against corruption is a collective responsibility that requires the participation of every citizen and public service worker. It is against this background that the Campaign for a Corruption-Free Service (CCFS) was introduced.

Through the Office of the National Coordinator in Charge of Education and Training, Comrade Samwaka Sambiana, the Union has organized this campaign to raise public awareness on the negative effects of corruption in public institutions and its impact on service delivery.

Comrade Sambiana has appealed to public service workers to adhere to laid-down procedures and guidelines when delivering services to citizens. She stated that the fight against corruption begins with individuals and requires commitment from all stakeholders.
She further noted that corruption undermines national development and negatively affects the effective delivery of public services.

She has since called on all public service workers to uphold integrity, discipline, transparency, and accountability in the ex*****on of their duties.

The Union is implementing the campaign in partnership with various stakeholders. The Anti-Corruption Commission remains the primary stakeholder in the implementation of all CCFS activities, alongside Civil Society Organizations working towards addressing corruption in Zambia.

Zambia joins the rest of the world in celebrating International Nurses Day under the theme “Our Nurses. Our Future. Empowered Nurses Save Lives.” This theme underscores the pressing need to equip nurses with essential resources, secure working conditions, and leadership opportunities, thereby strengthening healthcare systems worldwide.

Speaking in an interview with ZNBC TV1 on the Lozi programme dubbed ‘Njuwelelo Yaluna’ Zambia Union of Government and Allied Workers (UG) Director in charge of Professional Affairs, Dr. Allen Siyubo, mentioned that the Zambian Government’s effort through the Ministry of Health in employing 3,000 Health Personnel, with yet another target projection of 3,500 later in the year. This shows the government’s commitment to improving the nurse - patient ratio.

This is both symbolic and practical, as we celebrate nurses day while advocating for systemic reforms to empower them. The message is clear—empowered nurses are central to saving lives and building a stronger health system.

He went on to say that Zambia still faces nurse shortages, especially in rural areas, making empowerment crucial for equitable healthcare delivery. There is need to understand that empowered nurses strengthen Zambia’s ability to respond to pandemics, climate-related health challenges, and maternal-child health needs. By investing in nurses, Zambia supports its broader goal of achieving Universal Health Coverage (UHC) and improving population health outcomes.

He emphasized that as a Trade Union, we fully support the theme by advocating for better service conditions, fair pay, and recognition of nurses’ contributions.

Dr. Siyubo stated that International Nurses Day 2026 is not only a celebration of nurses but also a call for meaningful reforms within the healthcare sector. Empowering nurses through better working conditions, leadership opportunities, skills development, and government support is essential for saving lives and strengthening Zambia’s healthcare system. The message of the theme remains clear: empowered nurses are key to building a healthier and stronger future.

Signing Ceremony – 2026 Collective Agreement, NCZ

The Zambia Union of Government and Allied Workers (UG) and the National Union of Commercial and Industrial Workers (NUCIW) have successfully signed the 2026 Collective Agreement with Nitrogen Chemicals of Zambia (NCZ).

Representing UG were UG President Dr.Muyaywa M. Kabisa, UG General Secretary Comrade John Nsululu, and the UG Secretariat.

Dr. Kabisa, thanked NCZ management for their constructive engagement during negotiations.
He emphasized that this Agreement comes at a time when workers have faced significant economic pressures. Rising costs of living and past inflationary trends have tested the resilience of many households. Financial constraints have also been impactful.

“While we have recently seen some stabilization in key economic indicators, we remain mindful that the effects of past hardships are still being felt,” he said.

In this context, the improvements secured under this Agreement are both timely and necessary. This will go a long way in restoring purchasing power, improving morale, and reinforcing the dignity of work.

Dr. Kabisa also mentioned that he recognizes that this Agreement is being concluded at a time when NCZ is positioning itself for growth. The investment in expanded production capacity, including the installation of the new blending and granulating plant, signals a positive future for the enterprise.

He further appreciated the members for their patience, discipline, and unity throughout the negotiation process.

The Zambia Union of Government and Allied Workers reaffirm its commitment to championing and protecting the welfare of workers across Zambia.
