GOOD Shepherd Zambia Project

GOOD Shepherd Zambia Project Good Shepherd Zambia Project is an umbrella where several of our projects within Zambia are being undertaken.

There are many accomplishments we have scored since 2005 and I will explain below the nature of our projects. THE NG’OMBE TOWNSHIP READING CENTRE – Through help and donations from Delta Kappa Gamma Society International’s Educational Foundation, Members of Glenmont United Methodist Church, Wheaton, Maryland, USA, and individuals I cannot mention here, and people in the USA who care, Ng’ombe Townsh

ip Reading Centre is a fully fledged library with a stock of over 2000 books in different categories. The books are housed in a secured and well furnished hall right in the heart of Ng’ombe Township. In 2010 and 2011 we have also bought books that are in line with the Zambian curriculum for grades one up to seven in various subjects and teachers’ guides, though our aim is to buy books up to grade twelve. These books mainly are used for mentoring students so that they would be able to face national examinations without problems. Though we have achieved something in this area, we will only recognise our achievement only when we will have bought all books up to grade twelve. The centre is loved by children because of the stories that they have every day during the story hours sessions they have with their mentors. Our library has a wide range of books with children’s stories, puzzles and games which they have come to like and enjoy. Community schools in Ng’ombe such as Jubilee Community School, Good Hope Community School and others use our facility to mentor their pupils. We have many pupils from various schools studying using the facilities at the centre. GOOD SHEPHERD SCHOOL – in our efforts to try and alleviate illiteracy in our community, we launched the Good shepherd School in 2012 whose initial mandate will be to provide education to all age groups meaning from Nursery through to grade twelve and night school for men and women who were never privileged to go to school. The school started with pre-school 2012 and in 2015 it is going up to Grade Three. GOOD SHEPHERD DANCE TROUPE – using the dance troupe, we are teaching issues of safe motherhood and HIV/AIDS to members of the community. Especially we teach young girls the importance of education as opposed to early marriages. We select a spot and then the entertainment begins. Usually cultural dances attract a lot of people and when we have a good number, the dancers would do a dance and then share the information we have for a particular day. In this manner we are sure of reaching out to the targeted audience as some people don’t have radio or television to access such information. GOOD SHEPHERD INTERNET CAFE – we are now planning to start an internet cafe as the people of Ng’ombe have been denied such a facility. We believe that information is power and as such the people of Ng’ombe also deserve to be a part of the global village. It will be also an opportunity to be teaching both our pupils and the members of the public how to use a computer.
