Approximately 99% of breast cancers occur in women and 0.5–1% of breast cancers occur in men.

The treatment of breast cancer in men follows the same principles of management as for women

Stage 4 breast cancer couldn’t stop me, survivor graduates as registered nurse

WHEN life hit her with the terrifying words of 'stage four breast cancer', many thought it was the end of the road for Monica Banda.

But against all odds, she stood tall, fought hard and yesterday, she proudly walked across the graduation stage with a diploma in her hands.

Monica, a breast cancer survivor, was among the 139 health-care practitioners who graduated from the Defence School of Health Sciences -DSHS at a graduation ceremony held at Zambia Air Force -ZAF Mess in Lusaka's Chamba Valley yesterday.

Speaking shortly after the ceremony, Monica recalled how her dream of becoming a registered nurse was nearly crushed when she was diagnosed with stage four breast cancer in 2021.

“I had started my programme to become a registered nurse before I got sick,” she said.

Even when some doctors said there was nothing more they could do, Monica refused to give up.

“I was told I had cancer, stage four. I went through chemotherapy and at some point, some doctors said there was nothing more they could do," she added.

She paused her studies to focus on treatment and recovery but later returned to the classroom with renewed determination.

Today, she not only holds a diploma in registered nursing but is also pursuing a degree in public health.

Now a proud advocate for breast cancer awareness, Monica uses her experience to urge women to take early detection seriously.

She encourages others never to ignore strange changes in their bodies and to seek medical help immediately rather than turn to myths or traditional healers, reports Kalemba.

No one should face breast cancer alone. Your friends and family often want to help but may not know how. It’s OK to let them know what you need.

How do you want your loved ones to support you?

🇫🇷🤝 BCT x French Embassy | A Night of Shared Purpose

Last week, Breakthrough Cancer Trust was honored to attend a post-event cocktail hosted by the French Embassy in Lusaka. In his heartfelt remarks, the French Ambassador reminded us that “cancer is the same everywhere”—and that advocating for awareness is a global responsibility they’re proud to continue supporting.

We received this partnership with deep gratitude and great enthusiasm.

🌍✨ We also extend our thanks to Mastercook Africa, whose CEO reaffirmed the brand’s continued support for the BCT Cookathon as part of its Corporate Social Responsibility. Their commitment to community impact and cancer awareness is a powerful example of purpose-driven leadership.

Hearing “you have breast cancer” can turn your world upside down. 💔
It can be both physically, and mentally challenging.
It is not just a physical battle but an emotional one too.

But you don't need to face it alone. Talk to a healthcare provider, a counsellor and someone you trust.
Support can make all the difference!
