CARE Zambia

CARE Zambia CARE is a leading humanitarian organization fighting global poverty.

Since 1992, CARE Zambia has been working with Government, NGOs, and the private sector to deliver a range of programs aimed at improving the lives of poor, vulnerable and socially excluded individuals with a focus on women and girls. We provide long-term development and economic empowerment to communities facing challenges like HIV and AIDS, poverty, gender inequality, environmental degradation, n

atural disasters and conflict. We place special focus on working alongside women because, equipped with the proper resources, women and girls have the power to help whole families and entire communities escape poverty. Women are at the heart of CARE's community-based efforts to improve basic education, prevent the spread of HIV, increase access to clean water and sanitation, expand economic opportunity and protect natural resources. CARE Zambia, working with the Start Network Zambia Hub and partners, is strengthening Zambiaโ€™s readiness to prevent and respond to Ebola. Following a symbolic national handover, lifesaving IPC supplies have been distributed directly to districts like Mwense, ensuring support reaches communities where it matters most.

Through frontline training, risk communication, and improved hand hygiene, communities and health workers are better equipped to stay safe, detect risks early, and respond quickly.

Together with government and partners, CARE is helping build stronger, more resilient health systems, because protecting lives starts long before an emergency begins.

On Day & Day, we remember that Zambiaโ€™s greatest strength has always been its people. From the heroes who fought for freedom, to the everyday champions shaping our future.

From teachers opening doors through education, to women and youth finding strength in empowerment, to farmers leading climate-smart agriculture, and health workers protecting families, and communities standing together in times of crisis.

At CARE, we walk alongside these heroes, building a future where every community defeats poverty, and achieves social justice.

In a world where outbreaks can cross borders faster than warnings can reach communities, Zambia is choosing to act before the emergency knocks.

The Zambia National Public Health Institute (ZNPHI) recently received vital Ebola preparedness commodities through the Start Network Zambia Hub's Anticipatory Action Project, supported by CARE International and partner organizations.

ZNPHI Director General Prof. Roma Chilengi reiterated at the handover that, "preparedness is more than supplies, it's a shared commitment to protect lives."

While Zambia has not recorded a confirmed Ebola case, its proximity to countries that have battled outbreaks is a reminder that vigilance cannot wait for a crisis to arrive.

The donated commodities, including Infection Prevention and Control kits, handwashing facilities, and training for frontline health workers, will reach high-risk districts where early action matters most. Alongside these tools, community risk communication, radio programmes, and mobile messaging will carry life-saving knowledge directly into homes and villages, turning information into protection.

Ms. Mary Khozi, Country Director for Action Against Hunger, noted on behalf of the Hub, โ€œthis initiative proves the value of anticipatory action: investing before emergencies strike, not scrambling after they do.โ€

The initiative is locally led, community-rooted, and built to protect the very people on the frontlines of health, from nurses and clinic workers to mothers and village elders.

The Start Network Zambia Hub, comprising Action Against Hunger, CARE Zambia, Catholic Relief Services, People in Need Zambia, Plan International, Save the Children Zambia, and the Zambia Humanitarian Actors Platform, working hand in hand with the Ministry of Health Zambia, Zambia National Public Health Institute ZNPHI, Unicef Zambia, and World Health Organization (WHO), represents the power of partnership over isolation.

Today, CARE Zambia celebrates the power and potential of every African child. Through our early childhood education and early childhood development programs, CARE is helping children build a strong foundation by supporting their learning, confidence, creativity, and well-being from the very start.

By working with caregivers, teachers, and communities, CARE is promoting play-based learning and showing that simple, local resources can create meaningful opportunities for children to grow and thrive.

At the heart of our work, CARE ensures that girls stay in school, realizing their full potential and breaking cycles of poverty.

For CARE, this means creating safe learning environments through access to clean water and sanitation, so children can thrive in dignity and health. For adolescent girls, menstrual hygiene support ensures they never miss class because of stigma or lack of supplies.

We celebrate every African child.
