The Ministry of Community Development and Social Services has reintegrated 6,896 children from the streets into homes across the country over the past five years.

Ministry Principal Public Relations Officer Glenda Nachinga said the figure comprises 75 percent boys and 25 percent girls, noting that the Ministry has continued conducting outreach and rescue operations through the Child Protection Unit to remove children from the streets and place them in safe environments.

She says the Ministry is also providing temporary shelter and rehabilitation services at facilities such as Chikumbi Children’s Home in Lusaka and Mufulira Children’s Home on the Copperbelt.

Ms. Nachinga said rehabilitation programmes include psychosocial and trauma counseling, sports activities, family tracing and reintegration, educational support, and school re‑enrollment.

She added that the Ministry is working with cooperating partners such as Development Aid from People to People (DAPP) and the Zambia National Service (ZNS) to provide vocational and life skills training for the children.

However, she acknowledged challenges such as limited rehabilitation and transit centres and weak family support systems.
