Villages bordering the North Luangwa National Park and its surrounding Game Management Areas in Eastern Province of Zambia are facing a desperate struggle for survival. Lions, and other predators have claimed lives, while elephants and other herbivores have laid waste to crops and property, driven by habitat encroachment due to overpopulation.

The situation in Chief Chifunda and neighbouring Chiefdoms highlights the complex and delicate balance between human communities and wildlife conservation. While the protection of these majestic creatures is vital, it cannot come at the cost of human lives and livelihoods. Finding sustainable solutions that address the immediate needs of the communities while ensuring the long-term survival of wildlife is crucial.

Possible solutions:
β€’ Community-based conservation programs: Empowering the traditional leaders (Royal Highnesses) and local communities to become stewards of wildlife. Empower them to develop and implement conservation strategies that meet their needs and address their concerns.
β€’ Improved wildlife management: Implementing effective population control measures (e.g., game cropping and translocating animals to new areas) and empower traditional leaders to cull problem animals immediately after a verified incident.
β€’ Human-wildlife conflict mitigation strategies: Habitat protection and restoration projects within the protected areas to reduce competition for resources and push wildlife away from human settlements. Installation of animal-proof physical barrier (e.g., fencing) around villages to minimize interactions and losses.
β€’ Economic incentives: If people lose property or crops to wildlife, they should be compensated for their losses. This can help to reduce resentment towards wildlife and make people more supportive of conservation efforts.
β€’ Collaboration and partnerships: Fostering open dialoque and cooperation between communities, conservation authorities, and policymakers to develop solutions that address all concerns.

BCCF believes that all stakeholders including wildlife conservation organisations and the Zambian government’s Department of National Parks and Wildlife should work together and find ways to protect both people and wildlife.

🌍 World AIDS Day 2023: Let Communities Lead πŸ”΄
On this World AIDS Day, we at BCCF stand united with others under the theme "Let Communities Lead." It's a powerful call to action, emphasising the important role communities play in the fight against HIV/AIDS. Together, we can create a world where communities are empowered, educated, and at the forefront of change.
πŸ”· Empowerment through education: Knowledge is a formidable weapon. Let's empower our communities with information on prevention, testing, and support. Education breaks down barriers and builds a foundation of understanding.
πŸ”· Community support: Every voice matters. Let's foster a sense of belonging and support within our communities. Together, we can create safe spaces that encourage open conversations, reduce stigma, and promote mental well-being.
πŸ”· Advocacy for accessible healthcare: Communities have the power to advocate for accessible healthcare services. Let's work towards ensuring that everyone, regardless of their background and status in society, has access to the resources and treatment they need.

This World AIDS Day let’s amplify the voices of our communities. Together, we can make a lasting impact and move towards a future free from the stigma of HIV/AIDS. ❀️
