โ€œIn 2025, I was taken in for care at the ZNS Chongwe Clinic with a high viral load of 25,850 copies/ml. My mother had hidden from me that I was HIV positive until I asked her for consent to test. This made it difficult for me to accept my status and consistently take medication,โ€ said 22-year-old Grace Banda (not a real name).

Grace was identified at the age of 21 through the DAPP Total Control of the Epidemics (TCE) project operating from the Zambia National Service Camp Clinic in Chongwe District, 35 kilometres from Lusaka.

Grace received counselling, psychosocial support, and appointment reminders through the TRIO group and healthcare workers. A TRIO group is a support system made up of a client and two treatment supporters who help promote adherence, care, and healthy living.

Grace explained that although she had been taking medication since the age of seven, her mother told her it was for stomach problems and never disclosed that it was HIV treatment.

โ€œMy mother only revealed my HIV status after health workers accompanied me home to seek consent when I insisted on getting tested following a routine HIV awareness programme at school,โ€ she said.

Grace later experienced stigma from peers at school, which caused her to stop attending clinic appointments and taking medication. However, through continuous support from healthcare workers, she received adherence counselling, psychosocial support, and regular appointment reminders.

She later reconciled with her mother, who, together with her sister, became part of the DAPP Zambia TRIO support group.

โ€œAt first, I thought my life had stopped. But with support from community health workers and family, I learned that I can live a normal life with medication. I am now healthy, and my viral load is suppressed to only 20 copies/ml after four months of consistent treatment. Even when I find a partner, I cannot transmit HIV to him,โ€ she added.

High viral load among adolescent girls is often associated with stigma, fear of disclosure, treatment fatigue, school and work pressure, and missed clinic appointments.

Mapoma Primary School in Kachibiya District, Muchinga Province, has 700 pupils and 9 teachers. The school is 180 kilometers from the Great North Road, with poor roads and a limited network. Many children stop coming to school because of early marriages, early pregnancies, initiation ceremonies for girls called โ€˜Nachisungu,โ€™ and fishing activities in the Mukasi River.

Kabamba Mulenga is a Grade 6 teacher at Mapoma Primary School and a graduate of DAPP Mkushi College of Education. At the college, student teachers learn how to work with families, involve the community, and support learners in school. He understood that teaching in the classroom alone would not solve the issues learners face.

โ€œI noticed many of the learners were leaving school because of early marriages and teenage pregnancies, while others were helping their parents with fishing. Remembering my college community outreach experience, where we raised awareness about the social challenges the communities were facing. We listened to them as they spoke, worked with them shoulder to shoulder with families and local leaders, which helped us get closer to the reality and address these issues effectively. I decided to apply these lessons here,โ€ Kabamba said.

โ€œI began visiting homes to talk to parents about why sending their children to school is important. I also meet with the learners after school to explain why staying in school matters for their future. I donโ€™t do this alone โ€” I work together with the guidance and counseling teacher, and we involve the headmen to help organize meetings with parents. Seeing parents listen, discuss, and support their children reminds me why this work is important,โ€ he added.

He also engaged the female teachers to talk with the girls about protecting themselves.

โ€œWe teach the girls to say no to men who may want to take advantage of them. We tell them to report anything wrong to their parents or a teacher. This is helping the girls understand how to stay safe and continue their education,โ€ he explained.

Through these visits, discussions, and school activities, Kabamba noticed a change. Parents began supporting their childrenโ€™s education more actively. Eight learners who had left school because of early pregnancies have returned to school, and others are showing a willingness to continue learning.

โ€œNow we are seeing results. Children are coming back to school, and parents are helping with their learning. Teachers, parents, and the community are working together. This shows that when teachers use what they learned at college, involve parents, and guide learners, more children can stay in school and continue learning,โ€ he said.

โ€œBefore joining the DAPP Youth in Action Project, I lacked confidence and did not know how to plan for my future. Today, I am able to run my own business, support my family and encourage other young people to believe in themselves,โ€ said 18-year-old Winny Nankonje.

Winny is one of the young people benefiting from the DAPP Youth in Action Project in Ndolaโ€™s Kawama community, where many teenagers face poverty, limited opportunities and a lack of information.

Before joining the project, Winny depended entirely on her parents and had little knowledge about entrepreneurship, financial management, health or environmental protection. Although she dreamed of becoming independent and helping others, she did not know where to begin.

Through the DAPP Youth in Action Project, Winny participated in life skills training sessions where she learnt communication, leadership, decision-making, and self-esteem. The training helped her gain confidence and believe in her ability to shape her own future.

With support from the project, Winny received a starter pack which enabled her to start a small vegetable-growing business. Using the entrepreneurship skills, she acquired, she successfully managed the business and began generating income to meet her personal needs while also contributing to family expenses.

โ€œThe project taught me how to save money and manage my business well. Through the saving group, I learnt teamwork, responsibility and how to plan for the future,โ€ she explained.

Winny joined a saving group formed through the project where she learnt financial management, savings and borrowing skills. Over time, she accumulated enough savings to expand her business by investing in small farming equipment and agricultural inputs.

Apart from entrepreneurship, Winny also benefited from adolescent health education sessions which covered personal hygiene, nutrition, reproductive health and disease prevention. She now shares health information with fellow teenagers and encourages them to make healthy decisions.

Winny also became actively involved in environmental conservation activities such as tree planting, community clean-up campaigns and environmental awareness meetings organised through the project.

โ€œI have learnt that young people can make a difference in their communities if they are given the right support and opportunities,โ€ she said.

Today, Winny is recognised in her community as a hardworking and confident young woman who is successfully running her business, saving regularly and promoting health and environmental awareness among other youths.
Community members have praised her leadership, determination and commitment to helping others improve their lives.

โ€œDAPP Youth in Action Project has empowered me. Through its training, starter pack, village bank, health education and environmental activities, I have learnt to take care of myself, support my family and inspire other young people to believe in their dreams,โ€ she added.

A child's smile can brighten a community. A child's dream can change the future.

Today, we celebrate the boys and girls whose courage, creativity, and hope remind us why our work matters. Children are not waiting to become important tomorrowโ€”they are important today. Their voices deserve to be heard, their rights protected, and their potential nurtured.

Every classroom built, every book shared, every meal provided, and every act of kindness helps create a world where children can grow with confidence and dignity. When children are given opportunities to learn and thrive, they become the leaders, innovators, teachers, and change-makers of tomorrow.

On this International Childrenโ€™s Day, let us continue creating spaces where children feel safe, valued, and inspired to dream without limits. Together, we can help build a future where every child has the chance to discover their strengths and achieve their aspirations.

Because when children flourish, communities prosper, and nations grow stronger.

As DAPP Zambia, we are engaged in child development, care, and protection through all our projects

Happy International Childrenโ€™s Day 2026!

DAPP Mkushi College of Education and Malcolm Moffat College of Education held their Graduation Ceremony on 29th May 2026 in Serenje District, bringing together graduates, parents, education stakeholders, cooperating partners, and community members to celebrate another milestone in teacher education. The event saw 25 diploma graduates complete a three-year Diploma in Primary School Teaching.

Speaking during the ceremony, Reverend Canon James Phiri, General Secretary of the Council of Churches in Zambia, commended DAPP Mkushi College of Education for its approach to teacher training.

โ€œDAPP Mkushi College of Education is training teachers through teaching practice, community engagement, educational tours, research, leadership responsibilities, and digital learning. This approach helps student teachers understand the realities of the communities where they will serve and prepares them to support learners both inside and outside the classroom. Through these experiences, they learn to work with parents, community members, and local leaders, apply knowledge in real-life situations, and respond to the needs of learners wherever they are posted,โ€ he said.

He noted that the college equips future teachers with skills to work closely with parents, community members, and local leaders while encouraging independent learning through research and practical experiences.

Representing the Vice Chancellor of the University of Zambia, Professor Austin Mumba Cheyeka, congratulated the graduates. He encouraged them to use their knowledge, skills, and values to support learners and contribute to national development.

โ€œYou are joining a profession that shapes the future of our children and our nation. The knowledge, skills, and values you have gained during your training will help you guide learners and contribute to national development. As teachers, you will do more than teach subjects in the classroom. You will help children discover their abilities, build confidence, develop character, and prepare for life," he said.

"The communities where you will serve will look to you for guidance, leadership, and support. The work you do each day will influence not only the learners in front of you but also the future of their families, communities, and the country. Use the training you have received to create learning opportunities for every child and help build a society where education opens doors for all,โ€ he added.

DAPP Zambia Director of Programmes, Mwansa Katunga, highlighted the collegeโ€™s contribution to teacher education, noting that since 2012, DAPP Mkushi College of Education has trained 485 teachers and most of them are serving in schools across Zambia. As DAPP Zambia marks 40 years of working with communities, he encouraged graduates to use their training to serve learners and communities wherever they are needed.

The graduation ceremony celebrated the achievements of the graduates and the continued partnership between DAPP Mkushi College of Education, the University of Zambia, the Ministry of Education, the Council of Churches in Zambia, DAPP Zambia, and other cooperating partners in strengthening teacher education and expanding access to education across Zambia.

As Africa commemorates ๐‘จ๐’‡๐’“๐’Š๐’„๐’‚ ๐‘ซ๐’‚๐’š, education continues to play an important role in preparing young people to respond to the realities of their communities and contribute to development.

At DAPP Mkushi College of Education, teacher training goes beyond academic learning. The college prepares teachers to understand society, work with communities, and involve learners in the learning process.

Training at the college combines academic study, practical work, research, and community engagement. Instead of depending only on lectures, student teachers take an active role in their learning. They study in Core groups, discuss ideas, investigate problems, and search for answers together.

By combining technology, research, practical experiences, and community involvement, DAPP Mkushi College of Education is preparing teachers who can adapt, think independently, and work with learners and communities. This is how the college is shaping teachers fit for the 21st century.

The college also uses computers and digital learning methods as part of training (Determined Modern Method). Student teachers are given tasks and research topics that they study using computers, learning materials that are on the college server.

Through this process, they learn how to search for information, write reports, solve problems, and manage their studies. They investigate issues in education, community life, and society, then discuss and present their findings together.

This learning system gives student teachers responsibility for their own progress. They plan their study time, follow their progress through the point system, and learn how to work independently while receiving guidance from facilitators and lecturers.

DAPP Mkushi College also combines theory with real-life experiences. Through community outreach activities and educational tours across Zambia, student teachers interact with people from different communities and learn how society operates. They gain an understanding of the challenges learners face in both rural and urban areas and learn how to work with communities to support education.

Student teachers take part in running school activities through different function groups such as food production, maintenance, student welfare, entertainment, and the library. Through this system, they learn teamwork, leadership, planning, and responsibility while contributing to the daily operation of the college.

Africa Day 2026 โ€” Education Fit for the 21st Century

Today the African Union asks a question worth sitting with: what kind of education actually prepares young people for the lives they want to build?

Across the continent, millions are learning. Fewer are finding the bridge between what they learn and the work, income, or businesses they need next. That gap is where the real conversation lives this Africa Day.

At Humana People to People, four decades of working alongside communities has taught us something simple: skills matter when young people can use them. To earn. To start something. To contribute to the economies around them.

Over the coming days, we'll share what that looks like in practice โ€” from solar installations in Guinea-Bissau to year-long industrial attachments in Zimbabwe.

Happy Africa Day!

Today, DAPP Zambia joins the rest of the continent in commemorating Africa Day 2026 under the theme: โ€œSixty-three (63) Years of Unity, Integration and Development, Letโ€™s Celebrate Together.โ€

As Africa marks 63 years since the establishment of the Organization of African Unity, now the African Union, we celebrate the strength, resilience, and collective spirit of African people and communities.

At DAPP Zambia, we're committed to community-driven development that puts people at the forefront of finding solutions to local challenges through education, health, agriculture, climate resilience, and social inclusion โ€” contributing to a stronger, more sustainable Africa.

In education, continue promoting practical education models that bridge the gap between what they learn and the work, income, or businesses they need next.

Together, we continue building an Africa driven by unity, dignity, innovation and shared prosperity.

Happy Africa Day!
