Human Skills for a Growing Zambia

At in New York, The Duke of Edinburgh's International Award Foundation convened a Human Skills roundtable alongside the Big Six youth organisations. Around 80 representatives from more than 30 organisations took part, including UN agencies, technology companies, youth organisations and young people themselves.

We were proud that Zambia was in the room. We were particularly honoured to invite Mr Jito Kayumba Special Assistant and Advisor for Finance and Investments to President Hakainde Hichilema our Chief Patron to join this conversation on why resilience, empathy, leadership and adaptability matter more than ever for young people in a fast-changing world.

For us at the Award in Zambia, this is where the global conversation meets home. The Grow Zambia Agenda sets out ambitious targets in agriculture, energy, mining and tourism. Reaching them will take more than investment. It will take young Zambians who can lead, solve problems, work in teams and keep going when things get hard. Those are human skills, and that is what the Award builds.

The Grow Zambia Agenda also calls for a shift in mindset, from waiting for handouts to building through production. The Award works the same way. Nothing is given. Every young person earns their Award through their own effort, commitment and growth.

The strongest message from New York was partnership. No single organisation can do this alone. We look forward to working with government, schools, employers and partners to make sure every young Zambian has the chance to develop the skills and confidence to help grow our country.

When our youth grow, Zambia grows. 🇿🇲🌍

World Teachers’ Day | Celebrating Teachers Who Go Beyond the Classroom

We continue to celebrate World Teachers’ Day, we celebrate teachers who go beyond delivering lessons in the classroom to creating opportunities for young people to learn, discover their abilities and grow as individuals.

Through the Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award, Award Leaders play an important role in making learning experiential. Young people are encouraged to develop skills, serve their communities, stay physically active and take on challenges that build confidence, resilience and responsibility.

One such teacher is Mr Kalililo, an Award coordinator who has experienced first-hand the impact of learning beyond the classroom.

“Being an Award Leader has taught me that education goes far beyond the classroom. Through the Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award, I have seen young people develop confidence, resilience, responsibility and a willingness to challenge themselves.

Working with deaf learners has made this experience even more meaningful to me. The programme gives them opportunities to discover their abilities, participate actively, serve their communities and realise that their hearing impairment does not limit their potential.

For me, the greatest reward is seeing learners grow in confidence and believe in themselves. The Award is truly about preparing young people not just for school, but for life.”

As we celebrate teachers, we recognise Mr Kalililo and all Award Leaders who continue to create meaningful learning experiences beyond the classroom and help young people realise their potential.

Because education is not only about preparing young people for exams—it is about preparing them for life.

Happy World Teachers’ Day! 🌍

Today, we’re celebrating the incredible impact teachers have on young people’s lives — helping them discover passions, build confidence, challenge themselves and grow into the people they want to become.

And at The Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award, teachers are a huge part of making those journeys possible.

🎓 63% of Award Centres are schools, meaning teachers make up a significant proportion of the adults supporting young people through their Award journeys.

🌍 Last year, more than 197,000 adults supported young people to take part in the Award across 135 countries and territories.

Behind every young person who takes on a new challenge, learns a new skill or discovers something they didn’t know they were capable of, there’s often an adult encouraging them to take that first step.

To all the teachers, Award Leaders and educators who give their time, encouragement and belief to young people: thank you. 💛

In celebration of 70 years of The Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award, Bronze Award participants from Helen Kaunda Secondary School in Kitwe joined global efforts for World Cleanup Day.

As part of their Voluntary Service component, the students worked together to clean up the school surroundings, creating a safer, healthier, and more welcoming environment for their community. Led by the participants and supported by Award Coordinator Madam Pelatie Ndhlovu, the initiative highlighted the power of youth leadership and collaborative action.

Through hands-on experience, these young leaders continue to prove that teamwork and service drive lasting change.
