Media Network on Child Rights and Development MNCRD

The Media Network on Child Rights and Development (MNCRD) is a vibrant, membership driven, media association dedicated to sensitizing and equipping the media and children to cover child rights and development issues in Zambia. It works with government, civil society, cooperating partners, children and journalists to ensure that the voices of children and their issues are captured in the media to a

chieve policy change and implementation.
• VISION - A society where children’s rights are understood, prioritised and enforced.
• MISSION – We work to empower journalists, children, child rights actors and civil society with media skills and involve them to promote the upholding of children's rights and welfare by engaging with the media, civil society organisations, children and relevant government departments.
• CHILD RIGHTS APPROACH - The vision and mission statements adhere to the child rights approach by involving children in the planning, implementation and the monitoring and evaluation in all the programmes run by the MNCRD as active participants.

CNA members participated in the Children’s Climate Summit alongside fellow children from different organizations and districts across Zambia. The summit provided an important platform for children to raise their voices on climate change and contribute to conversations on protecting their future.

A major highlight of the summit was the formation of the Zambia Children Climate Council, a significant step towards strengthening child participation in climate governance and advocacy.

We are proud to share that Ashley, a CNA member, was elected as President of the Council, alongside 3 other CNA members who were elected to serve on the committee. 👏🏾🇿🇲

This achievement reflects the power of meaningful child participation and the growing leadership of children in shaping climate action in Zambia.

Congratulations to all the children who participated and made their voices heard!

We have received the passing on of former Children's News Agency member Mwiche Kaona with a great sense of shock.

Mwiche was a great leader who had more in store for her and Zambia 🇿🇲 as a whole.

This loss is painful, unexpected.

She will still be remembered for the works she did with various leaders in Zambia and from other parts of the world.

We pray God comforts her family, CNA members and other friends.

May her soul rest in peace.

Members of the Children’s News Agency under the Media Network on Children’s Rights and Development are participating in a Basic Eye Care Training organized by Orbis Zambia

The training is equipping CNA members with knowledge on eye health, common eye conditions in children, and the importance of early care. The information gained will empower them to raise awareness and advocate for better eye care for children in their communities and through the media.

Healthy vision supports learning, development, and a brighter future for every child.

📻✨ International Children’s Day of Broadcasting (ICDB)

Today, we join the global community in commemorating ICDB under the theme “Safeguarding Children in Media and Beyond.”

Members of the Children’s News Agency are live on Money FM, amplifying children’s voices and engaging in critical conversations on child abuse, harassment, neglect, and the impact of social media on children’s well-being.

As media practitioners and child rights advocates, we reaffirm our commitment to creating safe spaces on air, online, and beyond where children are protected, heard, and empowered.

Safeguarding children is not just a responsibility; it is a collective duty.

in 2008, 🇿🇲 ratified the Charter and submitted both the first initial report and the first periodic report to the ACERWC. The consideration of its first periodic report was done in October 2024.

In its concluding observations and recommendations, the committee commended Zambia for taking the following measures to improve the situation of children in the country:

The promulgation of the Children’s Code Act No. 12 of 2022 and efforts to harmonise related legislation, including the Anti-Human Trafficking (Amendment) Act No. 16 of 2022, Marriage Amendment Bill 2023, among other amendments;

The introduction of the Free Education Policy (2022) which has led to increased school enrolment, as well as the proactive efforts to address resulting challenges through community-driven initiatives to produce desks and build additional classrooms;

The implementation of social protection programs, including social cash transfers for child-headed households, benefiting over 2.2 million children, with special assistance for girls to continue their education;

The recruitment of over 15,000 health workers to address workforce shortages, and the increased Constituency Development Fund allocations for community projects, including the establishment of health facilities; and

The inclusion of children in the development of the report and the incorporation of their views in the report.
