There are a lot of similarities between Saul and david.but however there is a unique part that sets both David and Saul apart such that one became God's favourite while another became God's rejected king.
SIMILARITIES
both were chosen by God
both were announced and anointed to be kings
both served the same nation Israel
both served the same God,Jehovah
both did a gravity of wrong(sinned)
both were approached by a prophet of God after their sin
SAULS REJECTION
*in chapter 13,Saul offered the burnt offering to God which was not his responsibility but the responsibility of the priest Samuel.
*when Samuel arrived,he asked Saul what he had done,Saul instead went over to justify what he had done.saying I thought the Philistines will attack and that you will be late.
*to justify means to find the good thing in a wrong thing committed,it is a way of making what is bad seem good.
*in chapter 15,God orders Saul to go and kill the amalekites.he told him to kill all the children, cattle and men and women.but Saul acted according to his own will...
he went and killed the weak, left out the strong, the fat cows and the king.
*when approached about this,he went his own way of justification,he said I kept them alive because I want to offer them as sacrifice to God. notice how he again justifies his actions.
*The case is different for David.in 2 Samuel 12:14, Nathan a prophet of God approaches David, the first statement we hear from David in verse 13 is a statement of penance,he agreed he had done wrong and was very sorry about it....
This is why God had forgiven him.
*God is faithful to forgive us,the problem with many today is that we find justification for the wrong things we do.
*instead of agreeing and feeling sorry for doing bad,we find a reason to be praised in our wrongs ...
*I've heard of people say,I didn't have the money, that's why I accepted his proposal
*others say,he was my boss, what could I have done
*yet some also say,I needed the opportunity that's why I had to say yes
*all these are just ways in which we try to give justification to the wrong things we do.
*God wants us to truly repent, accept our wrong doing and seek for his grace,he is merciful and will surely forgive us if we approach him with a pure heart.
Amen!!!
