PAF RESCUES DEAF LEARNER’S EDUCATION
People’s Action Forum (PAF) has successfully helped a 14-year-old boy with hearing impairment in Mambwe District in Eastern Province of Zambia, secure financial support to pursue his secondary school education.
Harrison Longwe had faced difficulties progressing beyond primary school due to a lack of financial and material resources, which threatened to end his education aspirations.
Speaking in an interview, Mambwe District PAF Supervisor, Msamalia Banda, said Harrison’s mother was unable to meet the cost of school requirements such as uniforms, learning materials and transport after he was accepted to Grade Eight at Magweru School for the Deaf in Chipata District, owing to the family’s low-income background.
Ms Banda explained that PAF intervened and successfully facilitated sponsorship for the learner under the Constituency Development Fund (CDF) school bursary programme, enabling Harrison to commence his junior secondary education in 2024.
“As PAF, we have ensured that Harrison continues with his education through the CDF bursary without disruption,” she said.
Ms Banda further disclosed that Harrison has since excelled academically and is among the top-performing learners at Magweru School for the Blind, having progressed to Grade Ten this year.
Harrison’s mother, Olipa Tembo, a terminally ill widow, expressed gratitude to PAF for the timely intervention.
“I am thankful to PAF for facilitating the CDF bursary for my son when I had no means. This support has given me hope for a better future for both my son and the family,” Ms Tembo said.
