Natal mahogany, scientifically known as Trichilia emetica, is a large evergreen tree native to the tropical and subtropical regions of Africa, including South Africa, Mozambique, Zimbabwe and Zambia. It is known for its dense, spreading crown and attractive, glossy green leaves. Here are some key characteristics:

Appearance: The tree can grow up to 30 meters tall with a broad, rounded canopy. Its bark is smooth and gray when young, becoming rough and flaky as it matures.

Leaves: The leaves are compound, comprising several glossy, dark green leaflets that are elliptic to lanceolate in shape.

Flowers: Natal mahogany produces small, white to greenish flowers that are clustered in panicles. These flowers are fragrant and typically bloom in spring to early summer.

Fruit: The fruit is a small, three-lobed capsule that turns from green to brown as it matures, eventually splitting open to release seeds. Each seed is covered by a bright red aril, which attracts birds and other wildlife.

Habitat: It thrives in well-drained soils and can be found in a variety of habitats, from riverbanks and coastal forests to open woodlands.

Uses: Natal mahogany is valued for its timber, which is used in furniture making and construction.

Overall, Natal mahogany is an important tree both ecologically and economically in its native range.
