Habitat for Humanity Zambia is pleased to participate in the 14th Zambia Water Forum and Exhibition (ZAWAFE), held from 9th to 11th June 2026 at the Mulungushi International Conference Centre. The forum is convened under the theme โ€œFrom Commitments to Action: Accelerating Integrated Resilience Solutions for Vision 2030 and the Sustainable Development Goals.โ€

During the official opening ceremony, Her Honour Dr. Mutale Nalumango, Vice President of the Republic of Zambia, reaffirmed the Governmentโ€™s commitment to ensuring universal access to safe and clean water. She also commended Civil Society Organizations for their critical contributions to Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH) interventions across the country.

We were further honoured to welcome Mr. Romas Kamanga, Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Water Development and Sanitation, to our exhibition booth, where he engaged with our team and gained insights into our ongoing initiatives.

Today, Habitat for Humanity Zambia in partnership with the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources marked a significant milestone with the handover of Certificates of Title to 85 families in Makululu, Kabwe. The event, officiated by Central Province Permanent Secretary, Dr. Milner Mwanakampwe, was also graced by Kabwe District Commissioner, Mr. Lennox Shimwambwa, and other key stakeholders from the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources, underscoring a shared commitment under the National Land Titling Programme to improving the lives of vulnerable communities through secure land ownership.

These certificates go beyond legal documentation, they represent security, dignity, and opportunity. With 99-year tenure, beneficiary families now have protection from displacement and the confidence to invest in their homes, livelihoods, and future. This effort, supported by the Selavip Foundation through the Home Equals: Access to Security of Tenure project, is part of a broader goal to reach 462 households while prioritizing women, youth, and marginalized groups.

This progress demonstrates the power of collaboration in driving sustainable development. By strengthening land tenure systems, this initiative is helping build resilient communities and advancing the vision of a Zambia where every family has a safe and secure place to call home.

In her speech, Habitat for Humanity Zambia National Director, Ms. Ruth Mitimingi-Nabutali, said this milestone reflects the transformative power of secure land tenure, noting that it provides families with stability, encourages investment in housing, and strengthens community resilience.

Habitat for Humanity Zambia commemorated World Menstrual Hygiene Management (MHM) Day on 28th May 2026 with impactful community events in Kabwe and Ngabwe, under the global theme โ€œTogether for a .โ€ The commemorations took place at Nkrumah Extension in Kabwe and Mukubwe Primary School in Ngabwe, in collaboration with partners, Whisper a dream Foundation (WADF) and the Womenโ€™s Christian Association (YWCA). These events aimed to promote open dialogue, break the stigma surrounding menstruation, and improve access to accurate information and supportive environments for girls and women.

The activities drew enthusiastic participation from both teachers and pupils, creating a vibrant and inclusive atmosphere. Participants engaged in a range of interactive sessions, including keynote speeches that highlighted the importance of menstrual health education. Creative expressions such as arts and crafts were also featured, alongside cultural performances including traditional dances and drama sketches that used relatable storytelling to shed light on the challenges girls face during menstruation and the need for supportive communities.

Overall, the commemorations provided a strong platform for awareness and community engagement. By blending education with creative expression, the initiative not only enhanced knowledge of proper menstrual hygiene practices but also helped shift attitudes toward menstruation.

Last week, we had the privilege of hosting the Habitat for Humanity Uganda National Director, Mr. Paul Okiring, alongside the Partnership and Resource Development Manager, Mr. Ganafa Sumani. Their visit aimed to gain insights into how we effectively collaborate with corporate partners in advancing our shared vision of a world where everyone has access to decent housing.

During their stay, they visited key partners, including Zambia Airports Corporation Limited, Chilanga Cement PLC, and the Zambia National Building Society. The engagements were highly productive, and the Uganda team expressed appreciation for the valuable discussions, which will support them in strengthening their approach to working with corporate partners.

The visit also provided an opportunity to strengthen regional collaboration and knowledge sharing within the Habitat for Humanity network. By exchanging experiences, best practices, and lessons learned, both teams reinforced their commitment to building sustainable partnerships that drive impact, ultimately contributing to improved housing solutions and community development across the region.

On this significant occasion of African Freedom Day, Habitat for Humanity Zambia joins the rest of the continent in commemorating the enduring spirit of unity, resilience, and self-determination that defines Africa.

This day serves as a solemn reminder of the sacrifices made to secure freedom and independence, and a call to action to continue advancing inclusive and sustainable development for all. True freedom is strengthened when individuals and families have access to safe, decent, and affordable housing. As Habitat for Humanity Zambia, we remain committed to building strength, stability, and self-reliance through shelter. We recognize that a secure home is not only a basic human need, but also a foundation for improved livelihoods, health, and dignity.

Last week, Habitat for Humanity Zambia conducted refresher trainings for Savings Group Agents (SGAs) from Lusaka and Kabwe districts under the Creating Access to Safe housing Project. The sessions brought together agents from various communities to strengthen and refresh their knowledge on safe housing practices and community safeguarding.

The refresher trainings are aimed at enhancing the SGAsโ€™ capacity to effectively support and guide communities on safe and adequate housing solutions. Key areas of focus included safeguarding standards and behavior, habitability standards, construction processes, home improvement, water supply systems and borehole drilling, as well as the roadmap for accessing housing loans and other housing solutions.

As trusted community champions, the SGAs continue to play an important role in promoting safer, healthier, and more resilient homes within their communities. By strengthening their knowledge and practical understanding, the trainings are helping to ensure that families are better informed on housing improvement options that contribute to improved living conditions and overall well-being.

Habitat for Humanity Zambia remains committed to empowering communities with practical knowledge and sustainable solutions that advance access to decent and safe housing for all.

Last week, Habitat for Humanity Zambia represented by Program Manager Farai Shumba was privileged to participate at the launch of the Africa Urban Housing Practitioners Hub (AUHPH) in Nairobi, Kenya. The Hub is a regional multi stakeholder platform to promote knowledge exchange and collaboration in advancing sustainable housing and urban development solutions in African cities.

Africa is the worldโ€™s fastest urbanising region facing a complex housing deficit of over 56 million housing units, with over 238 million people residing in overcrowded and unsafe informal settlements. The housing challenges in Africa are further compounded by an estimated USD$1.4 trillion housing finance gap that limit both supply side development and demand side access to homeownership.

The AUHPH strongly resonates with Habitat for Humanityโ€™s โ€œLetโ€™s Open the Doorโ€ global campaign that has aims to increase access to affordable housing as the organisation celebrates its 50 year anniversary.
