🌱 𝗚𝗿𝗼𝘄𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗛𝗲𝗮𝗹𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗲𝗿 𝗟𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗻𝗲𝗿𝘀, 𝗢𝗻𝗲 𝗦𝗰𝗵𝗼𝗼𝗹 𝗚𝗮𝗿𝗱𝗲𝗻 𝗮𝘁 𝗮 𝗧𝗶𝗺𝗲! 🌱

Today, Habitat for Humanity Zambia facilitated a cooking competition for learners at Katondo BOCCS and interactive quiz sessions at Makululu C and Kafulamanse Primary Schools under our Green Gardens Project.

The quiz sessions tested learners' knowledge of Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH), Nutrition, and Agricultural Science, while the cooking competition gave pupils the opportunity to prepare nutritious meals using fresh vegetables harvested from the school gardens established through the project.

By combining practical learning with nutrition education, the Green Gardens Project is complementing the Government's school feeding programme by helping schools produce fresh vegetables that contribute to healthier, more nutritious meals for learners. At the same time, the project is creating healthier learning environments by promoting good hygiene practices and improved sanitation. These activities demonstrate how schools can become spaces where children not only learn in the classroom but also develop practical life skills that contribute to their health, wellbeing, and future.

Today, Habitat for Humanity Zambia, in partnership with the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources through the National Land Titling Programme, and with support from the SELAVIP Foundation, proudly handed over 115 Certificates of Title to families in Makululu, Kabwe.

Representing the Central Province Permanent Secretary, Dr. Milner Mwanakampwe, Kabwe District Commissioner Mr. Lennox Shimwambwa officiated the handover ceremony, where beneficiary families from Kamushanga, Kaputula, Kawama, Makululu, and Nakoli received their Certificates of Title. This milestone marks an important step towards strengthening land tenure security and empowering communities with legal ownership of their land.

Speaking on behalf of the Permanent Secretary, Mr. Shimwambwa commended Habitat for Humanity Zambia and its partners for their continued collaboration with the Government in advancing inclusive and sustainable development through secure land ownership and improved living conditions.

Habitat for Humanity Zambia National Director, Ms. Ruth Mitimingi Nabutali, reaffirmed the organisation’s commitment to working alongside the Government and strategic partners to expand access to safe, decent, and affordable housing while empowering families through secure land tenure.

As part of the day’s activities, the District Commissioner toured a 1x2 classroom block constructed by Habitat for Humanity Zambia for the Makululu community. The visit underscored Habitat’s broader commitment to strengthening community infrastructure and ensuring that children have access to safe, dignified, and quality learning environments.

Together with our partners, we remain committed to building stronger, more resilient communities where every family has not only a place to live, but a secure place to call home.

Zambia currently faces a housing deficit of approximately 1.5 million housing units, with the gap expected to grow if urgent action is not taken.

As part of Habitat for Humanity's global "Let's Open the Door" campaign celebrating 50 years of transforming lives through decent housing, Habitat for Humanity Zambia is proud to launch the local campaign on 21 July 2026.

The campaign will spotlight Zambia's housing, land tenure, and WASH challenges while mobilising communities, partners, institutions, and individuals to support sustainable housing solutions.

Because when we open the door to decent housing, we open the door to better health, education, security, dignity, and opportunity.

Last week, Habitat for Humanity Zambia facilitated a School Learning Exchange Visit at Katondo BOCCS Primary School in Kabwe, bringing together Makululu Day, Makululu C and Kafulamanse Primary Schools to share lessons on sustainable school gardens.
Speaking during the event, District Education Board Secretary (DEBS) Dr. Inonge Mulemwa commended Habitat for Humanity Zambia for its partnership with the Ministry of Education, noting that the Green Gardens Project is improving learner nutrition, attendance, retention and academic performance while equipping learners with practical life skills.
The visit also showcased the impressive progress at Katondo BOCCS Primary School, where the school garden is now helping provide nutritious meals for more than 1,000 learners.
Through the Green Gardens Project: A Holistic Approach to Food Security and WASH, Habitat for Humanity Zambia is supporting four schools in Kabwe with school gardens, fruit trees, feeding shelters and other climate-smart interventions that are strengthening food security, complimenting the school feeding program and creating healthier learning environments for children.

Yesterday marked a major milestone as the Rotary Club of Maluba and Habitat for Humanity Zambia formalized their partnership through the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding. This agreement establishes a strong framework for collaboration, bringing together Rotary’s leadership in community engagement and Habitat’s expertise in housing, Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH), and sustainable development to drive meaningful impact.

Under this MOU, both organizations have committed to clearly defined roles and shared responsibility in delivering impactful programs. Habitat for Humanity Zambia will provide technical leadership in housing, water, sanitation, and infrastructure development, while also supporting policy advocacy and capacity building. The Rotary Club of Maluba. will lead in community mobilization, monitoring and evaluation, and resource mobilization, ensuring that projects are well-targeted, accountable, and aligned with real community needs.

This partnership goes beyond intent, it introduces structured coordination through a Joint Coordination Committee, shared planning through annual work plans, and measurable outcomes guided by key performance indicators. Together, both partners aim to expand access to affordable housing, improve WASH services, and empower vulnerable communities, setting a foundation for sustainable, long-term transformation across Zambia.

Access to affordable housing finance remains one of the biggest barriers preventing many low-income families from achieving their dream of a decent home. To help address this challenge, Habitat for Humanity Zambia is pleased to be working with FINCA Zambia to promote Bondi Finance, an affordable housing loan product designed to enable families to Improve, Build or Buy their house.

This week, a team from Habitat for Humanity Zambia and FINCA Zambia have been engaging savings group members in low-income communities across Lusaka, introducing them to Bondi Finance and answering questions about how the product can support their housing needs. The strong interest and active participation from community members highlight the growing demand for accessible and affordable housing finance solutions.

Through partnerships such as this, we are not only connecting families to financial services but also opening the door to safer, healthier, and more resilient homes. A decent home is more than just shelter, it is the foundation for better health, improved livelihoods, and stronger communities.

Yesterday, we had the distinct honor of welcoming Abi Riak to our head office as she assumes her role as the Area Vice President for Habitat for Humanity in Africa, effective 8 June 2026.

We are particularly proud to be the first National Office in Africa that she has visited since taking up her position. Her visit provided an opportunity for a constructive and insightful engagement, during which we discussed her strategic vision and forthcoming priorities for the Habitat for Humanity Africa regional office.

This engagement represents a significant milestone for our organization, reaffirming our shared commitment to advancing sustainable and affordable housing solutions across the region. We look forward to collaborating closely under her leadership to expand our impact, strengthen partnerships, and continue improving the lives of communities through access to safe and decent shelter.

Habitat for Humanity Zambia is pleased to participate in the 14th Zambia Water Forum and Exhibition (ZAWAFE), held from 9th to 11th June 2026 at the Mulungushi International Conference Centre. The forum is convened under the theme “From Commitments to Action: Accelerating Integrated Resilience Solutions for Vision 2030 and the Sustainable Development Goals.”

During the official opening ceremony, Her Honour Dr. Mutale Nalumango, Vice President of the Republic of Zambia, reaffirmed the Government’s commitment to ensuring universal access to safe and clean water. She also commended Civil Society Organizations for their critical contributions to Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH) interventions across the country.

We were further honoured to welcome Mr. Romas Kamanga, Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Water Development and Sanitation, to our exhibition booth, where he engaged with our team and gained insights into our ongoing initiatives.
