ZAMBIA'S GOLD RUSH CHAOS

When the United Party for National Development (UPND) took office in August 2021, President Hakainde Hichilema made various commitments, one of which was to end illegal gold mining.

However, the forthcoming MakanDay investigation reveals that the UPND-led government has allowed illegal activities to persist, despite its pre-election promise to reform the mining sector.

MakanDay’s latest two-part report digs into Zambia's gold rush, focusing on Rufunsa district in Lusaka Province where Illegal artisanal miners dominate, extracting gold while facing exploitation from licensed companies like Gold Hunters.

The report by MakanDay sheds light on the complex realities of Zambia's gold trade and its implications for local communities and governance.
