ENVIRONMENTAL HEALTH: THE WORK THAT HAPPENS BEFORE THE HOSPITAL
In Zambia, when we talk about healthcare, most people immediately think of doctors, nurses, midwives, pharmacists and clinical officers.
But there is another side of health that works before a person becomes a patient.
Who checks whether the food we eat is safe?
Who monitors sanitation and hygiene?
Who investigates environmental health risks?
Who works to control conditions that can contribute to disease?
Who helps prevent outbreaks before they spread?
Environmental Health.
The work may not always happen inside a hospital, but it directly contributes to keeping communities healthy.
And this is not simply a title. Environmental Health is recognised as a health profession in Zambia, and environmental and sanitary functions form part of local public-health responsibilities.
HERE'S THE QUESTION:
If medicine treats disease and Environmental Health works to prevent disease by controlling health risks in the environment, why is Environmental Health still not as widely understood by the public?
Maybe it is time for us to show people what Environmental Health actually does.
Environmental Health deserves to be understood, recognised and represented.
