Was privileged to speak online at a round table discussion Organised by Penal Reform International at the 6th Congress on Probation and Parole.

It's interesting to note that the last available figures state that Zambia has 26 150 people in prison in Zambia. They are 87 correctional centers nation wide, 52 are conventional, 33 are open air correctional farms, and two are maximum security prisons. The holding capacity of Zambia's correctional centers is currently at 9 150, against the total population estimate of 26 150. This means the centers are populated by a near three folds (286%).

The effects of this violation include the violation of rights, violation of national and international standards for people in prison, inadequate and over stretched physical infrastructure, poor hygiene and health conditions, poor and inadequate probation such as skills development and recreation.

As a human rights advocate I believe now is the time to ensure that we implement well alternatives like probation, community service and Parole. In South Africa, Kenya, Uganda and Nigeria etc, community service, probation and parole are fully functional and used in helping to decongest prisons.

Once you serve one third of your sentence you will be given parole. If you have a 5 year sentence, after you serve 10 months you will be given the option based on recommendation.

We need to advocate strongly using the Tokyo, Mandela and Bangkok Rules for alternatives to incarceration ‼️

💡💡“The only guarantee for failure is to stop trying.” “Perseverance is not a long race; it is many short races one after the other.” “Many of life's failures are people who did not realise how close they were to success when they gave up.” “Failure is only the opportunity to begin again, this time more intelligently.”

We will not stop speaking about it, it is high time society's perception of incarceration changes‼️ We will Persevere ‼️

I would like to take this opportunity to thank Centre for Legal Support and Inmate Rehabilitation for giving me the opportunity to speak about the inclusion of formerly incarcerated women into society. I feel it about time we change the narrative

23-YEAR-OLD student Habiba Tembo (in white), weeps as she tries to embrace her lawyer, Petronella Kafumbe, from the Legal Aid Board, after she was given a three-year suspended sentence for child stealing, an offence attracting upto 14 years imprisonment.

Habiba had initially pleaded not guilty but the lawyer made her change the plea when she took over the case at defence stage.

The convict wept inconsolably after she received a lesser sentence which she will serve from outside prison for one year while undergoing counselling by Drug Enforcement Commission.

"We cannot always build the future for our youth, but we can build our youth for the future." - Franklin Delano Roosevelt

Happy Youth Day to all the youth and those young at heart!🥁🪗🪘🎻🎺🎹🎷

📌As an organization we believe that ensuring that our youths have the right mindset is key to attain sustainable development. Millions of men and women go through correctional facilities each year, if these people could be given the right "mindset" especially our incarcerated youth, these are the people who will help us improve our economy.

💭It is imperative that each youth questions themselves and asks questions that are relevant to one's future❓

💭What am I doing as a youth to not only benefit my family but my country at large❓We need patriotic mindsets❗

Let's unite as Zambians and became the change we want to see🤝 It starts from us‼️
