THE POWER OF DOCUMENTARY FILMMAKING

Yesterday the world watched the who's who of Hollywood celebrate the incredible films of the past couple of years. Bobi Wine: The People's President was the only African film nominated in the Best Documentary Feature Film category.

The powerful documentary was co-written and directed by Ugandan filmmaker, Moses Bwayo was screened at the 79th Venice International Film Festival, where it had its world premiere on 1st September 2022. National Geographic, in partnership with Variance Films, gave the film a limited theatrical release beginning in New York and Los Angeles on 28 July 2023.

We want to see more African filmmakers step into telling compelling and important stories through documentary. Yesterday Sona Film Institute launched our short documentary fund to give one Zambian filmmaker the opportunity to tell a story about Zambia today.
