Chawama By-Election Marked by Unity and Community Empowerment

‎The Chawama by-election period has been characterised not only by political engagement, but also by notable acts of goodwill and community service that have strengthened unity and hope among residents.

‎During this time, Chawama has experienced positive interventions from various public figures who have stepped forward to support vulnerable groups and address practical community needs. These efforts have underscored the importance of leadership that prioritises people’s welfare alongside democratic participation.

‎Among the leaders who have made a meaningful impact is Hon. Ketty Nanyangwe, Deputy Mayor of the Lusaka City Council. Hon. Nanyangwe demonstrated practical and compassionate leadership through her support to local marketers, recognising their critical role in sustaining households and contributing to the local economy.

‎Her intervention included the donation of regalia and financial support aimed at empowering marketers and enhancing their capacity to conduct business with dignity and confidence. These contributions provided timely relief and motivation.

‎Hon. Nanyangwe’s actions reflect a people-centred approach to leadership, one that goes beyond rhetoric to deliver tangible support. Her engagement in Chawama has been widely viewed as a demonstration of inclusive governance, social responsibility and commitment to grassroots development.

Don’t Kubeba: A Human Rights Anthem That Reshaped Zambia’s Democratic Landscape.

Wesley Chibambo, affectionately known as King Dandy Crazy, has left an indelible mark on Zambia through his song Don’t Kubeba. While many mistakenly associate it with political partisanship, its core message transcended politics and resonated deeply with human rights and the democratic ideals of freedom and independence.

For years, Zambians faced subtle yet pervasive forms of voter coercion. Monetary or material incentives from political parties often came with an unspoken expectation—vote for us. This system undermined the very essence of democracy: free will and independent choice. It created an environment where political allegiance was less about individual conviction and more about compulsion borne of economic vulnerability.

In Don’t Kubeba, Wesley Chibambo courageously addressed this injustice. The phrase, translating to "don’t tell," became a rallying cry for silent resistance against voter manipulation. The song reminded Zambians that the ballot box is a sacred space, a place where one’s choices are protected and private. By empowering individuals to accept gifts without feeling bound to reciprocate with votes, Dandy Crazy restored dignity to the electoral process.

This was not just a cultural moment but a pivotal shift in Zambia’s democratic evolution. Chibambo’s song served as a beacon of hope for those who had felt trapped in a cycle of coercion. It affirmed that their political choices were theirs alone—a fundamental human right enshrined in both domestic and international frameworks.

Today, Zambians stand as testament to the power of this message. The electoral process has transformed, allowing individuals to vote based on principles rather than pressure. This evolution is a legacy of both Dandy Crazy’s bravery and the resilience of the Zambian people.

While we mourn the loss of Wesley Chibambo, his spirit lives on in every Zambian who steps into the voting booth with confidence and independence. His song is more than a melody; it is a clarion call for justice, a reminder of the power of choice, and an enduring symbol of hope for generations to come.

May we carry forward his legacy with the same courage and conviction, ensuring that every voice in Zambia is heard, respected, and valued.

Rest in power, King Dandy Crazy. Your song changed a nation.
