Did you know that many small-scale farmers struggle to access insurance that could help them recover from shocksโ‰๏ธ

Droughts, pest infestations and other external factors can force them to sell essential assets, compromise their families' nutrition and even leave farming to find work elsewhere.

But agricultural insurance can help small-scale farmers manage these risksโฌ‡๏ธ

Take IFAD's INSURED programme ๐Ÿ‘‰ with an initial investment of US$6 million from Sida - Styrelsen fรถr Internationellt Utvecklingssamarbete, the programme has provided crop insurance to about 630,000 rural people in Guatemala, Kenya, Uganda and Zambia.

๐Ÿ”Ž๐Ÿ‡ฐ๐Ÿ‡ช In Kenya, for example, INSURED worked with local insurance companies to determine the average crop yield in different areas. If yields are below average, insured farmers receive compensation to cover their losses.

๐Ÿ“กEmbedding integrated solutions in broader rural development strategies is key to building rural resilience. That's why IFAD is working with governments to develop risk mitigation approaches tailored to rural communities โ€“ combining insurance with advisory services and climate-smart agricultural services.

โ€˜Before, people worked on the land. They planted corn, beans, rice and chili. Now the company is taking everything. They came in and planted without permission. Thereโ€™s only palm field now. And people are running out of land.โ€™- Florinda Noemi Xol Guitz

GOVERNMENT SUPPORT TRANSFORMS LIFE OF 81-YEAR-OLD FARMER WITH A DISABILITY

An 81-year-old man from Makungwe village in Chipata, Eastern Province, is defying the odds and thriving despite having a disability.

Pesto Phiri, who lost a limb due to amputation, has become a symbol of resilience and determination in his community.

A recipient of the government's Social Cash Transfer programme, Mr. Phiri has refused to let his disability define him, but continues to provide for his family through his enduring passion for farming.

Before his amputation, which brought significant challenges, Mr. Phiri led a typical life, working his land and supporting his loved ones.

Despite the challenges associated to his amputation, the Social Cash Transfer programme marked a turning point, enabling him to maintain his livelihood and improve his quality of life.

"I'm more than thankful to the government and its cooperating partners for coming to my aid," said Mr. Phiri", who has accepted his disability, but refused to let it determine his future.

With the assistance he receives, Mr. Phiri has achieved remarkable milestones, including purchasing cows to ease his farming workload, construct a house, and enhance domestic food security through increased agricultural productivity.
