ACTION NEEDED BEFORE 30TH MAY. A PROPOSED USD111.7M HYDRO PLANT ON THE MUTINONDO WATERFALLS.

The Mutinondo Waterfalls which are a National Heritage site will be reduced to 5% flow if this project is allowed to proceed. This area is also a vital part of the area which has been included on the World Heritage Site short list. This proposal includes clearing and covering 236 hectares down the escarpment within the Luangwa Forest Reserve, the Game Mangement Area, reaching up onto the Mutinondo Wilderness Area plateau area. In addition, 19 hectares of riverine vegetation will be cleared, a further 62 hectares of riverine habitat will be indirectly impacted during this operation. There will also be an 80 km powerline running along the bottom of the Muchinga escarpment along the edge of the Luangwa Valley.

The ESIA was poor on mitigation and the replies to the stakeholders concerns and objections to this were white-washed over by very inexplicit, inept and unconvincing solutions. No alternative power sources have been explored. There is no contingency, should this fail. First hand experience of water flow particularly during the dry season, doesn’t justify the amount of promised power to be generated. The consultants have failed to release evidence of the records from which they worked their water flow projections. There is not enough evidence in the reports to be convinced that this is an economical, environmental let alone successful solution to Zambia’s power supply. It is a drop in the ocean for what is required, yet it threatens a large, devastating and irreparable footprint. This concrete and steel monster could scar this magnificent landscape, and haunt this area forever.

BEFORE 30TH MAY, please write to The Director, Zema, Lusaka [email protected] [email protected] [email protected] [email protected] answering the following three questions:
1. Is the project purpose & objective justifiable – is the project acceptable.
2. Is the proposed project location suitable for the purpose?
3. Are the proposed mitigation & enhanced measures adequate or can they be improved upon?

The First Lady of the Republic of Botswana, Mrs. Kaone Boko, this morning applauded the private sector for mobilizing close to 1.5 million USD and implementing programs aimed towards advancing child rights in Botswana during the UNICEF Botswana CEOs Council for Child Rights Forum.
Addressing business leaders and partners, the First Lady called for greater focus on empowering the boy child alongside ongoing efforts to uplift girls, warning that leaving boys behind could fuel violence and other social challenges.
“While empowering the girl child remains important, we must also guide and support boys to develop positively,” she said.

El Nino most likely later this year-NASA

Let's prepare for possible low rainfall.

The training happening now in Chiwowo won't just feed families this year. It'll change how this community farms for a generation. chicken systems that provide protein and manure, and demo plots where neighbors can learn for free. These aren't quick fixes. They're transferable skills. And the person learning them today will teach someone else tomorrow. That's the work we're here for.

Something special is happening in Chiwowo. Our second training cohort is underway, These sessions run straight through month-end, covering everything from keyhole garden design to beehive placement to chicken health basics. But the real magic? Watching trainees turn to each other for answers, forming clusters that will become support networks long after we leave. We started with a first team last month. Now a second is rising. That's how momentum works.

El Niño highly likely-Zambia Meteorological Department

There's a rhythm to good training. In Chiwowo, our second group gathers each day learning, practicing, preparing. We're covering keyhole gardens, beehives, chicken management, and demo plot design not as theory, but as living skills. By month-end, they wouldn't just have attended a workshop. They'll be ready to lead their own community projects. That's the goal: not just training people, but trusting them to carry the work forward.
