Oval Mining, Cooperlemon Consultancy, and The Bushbaby Foundation Enhance Police Visibility in Kanakantapa with Strategic Billboard Installation

In a powerful demonstration of corporate social responsibility (CSR) and inter-organizational collaboration, Oval Mining, in partnership with Cooperlemon Consultancy Limited and The Bushbaby Foundation, has taken a significant step toward improving public safety and police accessibility in Kanakantapa, Zambia. The joint effort saw the donation and installation of two professionally designed billboards at the Kanakantapa Police Post, strategically positioned along the Kanakantapa Road to increase visibility and public engagement with law enforcement services.

Tackling Visibility Challenges at the Grassroots Level
For years, residents of Kanakantapa faced difficulties in locating or accessing their local police post, especially during emergencies involving gender-based violence (GBV), theft, or abuse. This lack of visibility often led to delayed reporting and weakened community-police relations. Recognizing this critical gap, Oval Mining, with logistical and strategic support from Cooperlemon Consultancy and community development insights from The Bushbaby Foundation, initiated a public visibility enhancement project that directly addressed these concerns.

According to Officer-in-Charge Mr. Mulenga, one of the core challenges was that many residents simply didn’t know where the police post was located. “People would walk past the police post without realizing it was there. Now, the new billboards act as beacons of safety, reminding the community that this is a place to turn to for help, support, or guidance,” he noted.

Community-Driven Messaging and Inclusive Design
The messaging on the billboards was not arbitrarily chosen—it was co-created with local police officers, community leaders, and representatives from the three partner organizations. The goal was to ensure the billboards were not only visually impactful but also inclusive and accessible to people of varying literacy levels. Each billboard features the official police badge, bold safety messages, and directional cues, reinforcing the idea that the Kanakantapa Police Post is a welcoming, responsive, and active force within the community.

Impact Already Taking Root
Since the installation, the police post has recorded a measurable increase in walk-in reports, community inquiries, and general engagement. Residents now know where to report crimes and seek assistance, and local leaders—including pastors and youth coordinators—have lauded the initiative for bridging the gap between law enforcement and the public.

Feedback has been overwhelmingly positive, with many community members expressing that the presence of the billboards has not only improved police visibility but has also instilled a renewed sense of safety and trust in the system.

A Multi-Stakeholder Commitment to Community Safety
This project exemplifies what’s possible when mining companies and social development partners align around a shared vision. As Oval Mining continues to operate responsibly in its license areas, Cooperlemon Consultancy provides strategic advisory on CSR implementation, while The Bushbaby Foundation ensures the initiatives are human-centered and community-focused.

My name is Tolayi Sikumba.
I am a Mining Consultant and Legal Practitioner by profession but at heart I am a patriotic Zambian with a love for nature our local folklore.

I come from a long line of pioneering women with my grandmother being the first girl to make it to Chipembi Girls Secondary School in 1957, hailing from the humble villages in the highlands of Monze and my mother was the first female radio Disk Jocky (DJ) with Radio Phoenix and 5Fm where she took the air-waves by storm with her charismatic sound going by her famous name 'The Black Mama Jamma'.

In the course of doing business in the mining and tourism sectors as well as being a minister of the law as a legal practitioner, I have had the great privilege of traveling into Zambia and interacting with the most fascinating people and bearing witness to Zambia’s beauty.

In all the wonder and splendor of the Zambian people and its breath taking landscapes I have unfortunately witnessed glaring inequalities and injustices that plague the communities of rural and peri urban Zambia. Being a advocate for change and a strong believer in affirmative action I decided to found a non-profit organization called The Bushbaby Foundation through which justice and capacity building would be made available to ensure human transformation for a better Zambia.

The Bushbaby Foundation through Cooperlemon Consultancy Limited, our co-founding partner and its network of collaborating partners in the mining and tourism sectors seek to empower the communities in which they operate to ensure lasting change through capacity building and basic legal rights education.

Christmas Charity Event in Kanakantapa | Bushbaby Foundation Leads Community Outreach in Zambia
Spreading Joy and Building Community Through Sports and Giving

On December 24th, the Bushbaby Foundation, in collaboration with Evergreen School, Oval Mining, Power Divine Missions, and the Kanakantapa community, hosted a successful and heartwarming Christmas charity event in Kanakantapa, Zambia. The initiative brought together children, families, and local leaders for a day of festive cheer, community engagement, and youth sports development.

Held on the grounds of Evergreen School, the event exemplified the Bushbaby Foundation’s commitment to community outreach in rural Zambia, especially during the holiday season. Over 300 children participated in an afternoon filled with meaningful activities aimed at fostering unity, sportsmanship, and shared joy.

Empowering Youth Through Sports in Zambia
The day kicked off with welcoming remarks from the Kanakantapa Ward Councillor, who served as the guest of honour. His speech highlighted the importance of investing in young people, building resilient communities, and the role of partnerships in achieving sustainable development goals.

The sports segment featured three friendly matches:

A girls’ football match between Evergreen School and the Kanakantapa community

A boys’ football match showcasing youth talent and team spirit

A thrilling netball match played with passion and camaraderie

These games were not just competitions—they were opportunities for youth empowerment, gender inclusion in sports, and community building through active engagement.

Christmas Lunch and Celebration of Togetherness
After the matches, attendees were treated to a Christmas lunch prepared with care. The scent of home-cooked Zambian meals filled the air, creating an atmosphere of warmth and celebration. Children, teachers, and community members shared stories and laughter, reinforcing the power of communal meals in bringing people together.

This shared lunch symbolized the core values of the Bushbaby Foundation: inclusion, compassion, and togetherness.

Award Ceremony and Donations for Future Growth
The event concluded with a formal award ceremony, recognizing outstanding teams:

Kanakantapa girls’ netball team – Winner

Kanakantapa boys’ football team – Winner

Evergreen girls’ football team – Runner-up

Winners received trophies and cash prizes of K1500, while runners-up took home K500, acknowledging their effort and dedication.

To support ongoing youth development through sport, Bushbaby Foundation, Oval Mining, and Power Divine Missions donated brand-new footballs and netballs to Evergreen School. These gifts will ensure that children continue to learn teamwork, discipline, and resilience through play.

Supporting Community Outreach in Zambia
