The first cypher was in December 2009, at the play park in Libala Stage Two.

No social media to announce it, no equipment, no stage. Somebody said there would be a cypher on Friday, and there was.

The young people who came that first Friday did not come for a brand. There was no brand. They came because somebody had finally made a place to go next.

That is the date, and it is the one that matters, because everything after it was built on that Friday.

The ones coming behind them are standing on the same corners with the same amount of talent and less of a route.

This page went quiet for a while. The work did not stop, the posting did.

So we are putting the record back where it can be found: the crowds, the troupes, the schools, the sponsors, the years of it. Not because it is nostalgic. Because a movement with no visible receipts is indistinguishable from an idea.

That last word has been on our mark for years and it is the one that gets left out everywhere else. Zambia is good at finding talent and reasonable at developing it. Then it stops, and the artist stays exactly where they started.

Getting them out, and getting them paid for it, was always the point.

It still is. Everything before that verb is preparation for it.

When Muzala Samukonga came home with that medal we posted it the same day, and we said next we want to see a Grammy.

We meant it. A country that can produce a world class runner can produce a world class artist, and the reason it usually does not is that nobody built the ladder.

Talent was never our shortage.

It still is not. What has been missing is the ladder, and a ladder is a thing you can actually build.
