ZRCS AND DMMU STRENGTHEN MEDIA CAPACITY IN DISASTER RISK REPORTING

Zambia Red Cross Society HQ (ZRCS), in collaboration with Disaster Management & Mitigation Unit - DMMU convened a media training workshop on 29 April 2026 at Chita Lodge in Kafue, bringing together over 14 media houses.
The training, with the support of Officers from Zambia Meteorological Department (ZMD) and Water Resources Management Authority - WARMA, is aimed at strengthening the capacity of Journalists, to enable them report across the disaster management cycle, promoting accurate and timely reporting.
The workshop was officiated by DMMU National Coordinator Mr. Norman Chipakupaku, who said ethical, well informed and impartial reporting is key to informing the public before, during, and after disasters.
ZRCS Board Information Chairperson Mr. Eusabious Musonda said collaboration is critical to improving preparedness, response, and information sharing.
The initiative reinforces a shared commitment to professional and effective disaster risk reduction communication.

Zambia Red Cross Society (ZRCS) took part in the Commemoration of World Day for Safety and Health at Work 2026, held in Kitwe, Copperbelt, on 27th April, 2026 under the theme; Good Psychosocial Working Environments: A Pathway to Thriving Workers and Strong Organisations.

The event was graced by the Minister of Labour and Social Security, Madam Brenda Tambatamba, who emphasised the importance of a psychologically safe working environment for all.

Forecast Based Financing stakeholder workshop.

On 24th April, Secretary General of Zambia Red Cross Society (ZRCS), Mr. Cosmas Sakala, emphasized that financing efforts should prioritize Disaster Risk Management (DRM) rather than focusing solely on disaster response. He made these remarks during a Forecast-Based Financing (FBF) training organized by the ZRCS.

The training brought together key stakeholders from the Zambia Meteorological Department (ZMD), Water Resources Management Authority (WARMA), and Disaster Management and Mitigation Unit (DMMU), highlighting the importance of coordinated efforts in disaster preparedness and risk reduction.

Among the attendees was Assistant Director Madam Miyanda Syabwengo, who represented the Director, ZMD. The training was held at Chita Lodge in Kafue District.

Zambia Red Cross Society HQ (ZRCS) is participating in the ongoing African MHPSS Network Meeting in Nairobi, bringing together over thirty (30) National Red Cross & Red Crescent Societies, to strengthen mental health and psychosocial support (MHPSS) across the continent.
Participating in the workshop are, ZRCS Director of Programes, Dr. Jack Bbabbi & Mental Health & Psychosocial Support, (MHPSS) Officer, Serah Kalumbilo, who are providing leadership and support to the participants.
Organized by the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC), the Psychosocial Support Hub, the Rode Kruis (NLRC), and co-hosted by the Kenya Red Cross Society (KRCS), the meeting provides a platform for knowledge exchange, collaboration, and advancing community-based MHPSS approaches.
ZRCS’ participation reflects its continued commitment to strengthening support for communities facing mental health challenges across Zambia.

Funded by the Rode Kruis through the Learning Exchange initiative, the visit brings together shared knowledge, experiences, and challenges from ongoing work in tree planting and environmental restoration.
With similar climate realities, the exchange is strengthening approaches that support community resilience while restoring the environment.

ZRCS Pays a Courtesy Call to UNICEF

On 9th April 2026, Zambia Red Cross Society HQ Secretary General & CEO, Mr. Sakala, paid a courtesy call on Dr. Saja Farooq Abdullah, Unicef Zambia In-Country Representative.

The meeting highlighted the strong partnership between ZRCS and UNICEF, built on shared priorities and impactful collaboration in various programmes and emergency responses.
