DEAR UNITUZ MEMBERS AND THE ENTIRE LABOUR MOVEMENT,

As we approach this joyous Christmas season, the United Teachers Union of Zambia (UNITUZ) extends warm greetings to all our members, fellow unions, and the broader labour fraternity across our nation.

This year has reminded us of the power of solidarity. In classrooms, offices, communities, and workplaces, you have continued to serve with dedication, resilience, and courage in the face of social and economic challenges. Your commitment to decent work, social justice, and quality public services especially education remains the backbone of our country’s development.

Christmas is a time of reflection, gratitude, and renewed hope. As we celebrate, let us remember the values that unite the labour movement: unity, fairness, respect for workers’ rights, and the belief that every worker deserves dignity and a better future. May this season inspire us to strengthen our collective voice, deepen our collaboration, and stand even firmer in defence of workers’ rights and welfare.

To our members: thank you for your unwavering trust in UNITUZ and for your sacrifices in shaping the minds and futures of our learners.
To the entire labour movement: we value our shared struggles and victories, and we look forward to even stronger partnerships in the year ahead.

May this Christmas bring you and your families peace, joy, and rest.
May the New Year usher in improved working conditions, greater unity in the labour movement, and renewed energy for the struggles and achievements that lie ahead.

Merry Christmas and a Prosperous New Year to all workers of Zambia!

JAMES SIKAZWE.

PRESS STATEMENT
18th December, 2025
UNITUZ WELCOMES ONGOING PENSION REFORMS

The United Teachers’ Union of Zambia (UNITUZ) is delighted to inform its members and the general public that Government has responded positively to long-standing calls for pension reforms.
Consultative meetings involving the Government, pension institutions and stakeholders including trade unions are underway to harmonise schemes such as the National Pension Scheme Authority (NAPSA), the Public Service Pensions Fund (PSPF) and the Local Authorities Superannuation Fund (LASF).
UNITUZ wholeheartedly supports these reforms which aim to enable public service workers, including teachers, to access both lumpsum and annuities for a dignified and sustainable retirement. We commend the Government’s commitment and the contributions of all stakeholders in advancing dignity and financial security for retirees. These efforts align with the principles of International Labour Organization (ILO) Convention No. 102 which encourages the provision of basic needs such as food, housing, and transport as well as full societal participation in old age.
We urge all public service workers and UNITUZ members to embrace and support the proposed harmonisation of NAPSA, LASF and PSPF. These changes promise enhanced benefit packages, improved sustainability and alignment with economic conditions aimed at addressing the longstanding demands of civil servants.
UNITUZ reaffirms its dedication to advocating for worker empowerment, fair compensation during and after service and a pension system rooted in justice, accountability and protection against poverty in retirement. We call for unity among workers to support these long-awaited reforms, which demonstrate the Government’s goodwill in delivering dignified social security for retirees, persons with disabilities and surviving families.
As we approach the festive season, UNITUZ extends warm compliments and wishes all members a happy and prosperous 2026.
