On Heroes’ Day, we honour the men and women who have shaped Zambia’s journey,and we also celebrate a quieter kind of heroism: the nurses, clinical officers, tutors, preceptors and frontline health workers who show up every day to build a healthier nation.
As SolidarMed marks 100 years of partnership and service, we salute Zambia’s health workforce heroes who continue to change lives, one patient, one student and one community at a time.
Their dedication is at the heart of stronger rural healthcare.

Stronger healthcare starts with stronger institutions and the people behind them.

Last week, the SUDEN programme reached an important milestone with its final research capacity-building training, delivered in partnership with the National Health Research Authority Zambia(NHRA) and the Ministry of Health Zambia.

Tutors and staff from nursing and midwifery training colleges strengthened their ability to design, conduct and ethically manage health research within their own institutions.

Why does this matter?

When training institutions generate their own evidence, they are better equipped to improve how nurses and midwives are prepared, respond to local health realities and contribute to Zambia’s national health priorities. Research strengthens decision-making and helps create a culture of continuous learning that lasts beyond individual programmes.

Through SUDEN, we are supporting more than training alone — we are helping build the systems that foster sustainability and continuity, skills and institutional capacity that prepare health workers to serve where they are needed most.

Because stronger institutions help build stronger rural healthcare.

What does stronger rural healthcare require?
It starts with health workers who are trained, prepared and supported to serve where they are needed most.
At eLearning Africa 2026 in Accra, Ghana, our team shared Zambia’s experience in advancing pre-service Nursing & Midwifery education through digital and blended learning under the theme: Africa’s Time, Africa’s Terms: Learning for Sovereignty, Strength and Solidarity.
Following the successful acceptance of the abstract “eLearning Development Process for Pre-Service Nursing & Midwifery Education in Zambia: A Collaborative Path to Implementation,” representatives from the Nursing & Midwifery Council of Zambia (NMCZ), SolidarMed Zambia and the University of Zambia (UNZA) showcased how partnership, practical design and institutional collaboration are shaping the future of health education.
The session highlighted:
- A collaborative development process involving key stakeholders
- Application of the ADDIE instructional design methodology
- Demonstration of key features of the eLearning Platform
- Lessons on digital tools and blended learning for health workforce preparation
This engagement was more than conference participation. It contributed to strengthening the systems that prepare future nurses and midwives for real service delivery.
As NMCZ prepares to pilot the Learning Management System for the Diploma in Nursing and Midwifery programme in July, insights gained will support implementation and help strengthen practical, accessible and sustainable health worker training.
Because stronger rural healthcare starts with stronger health workers.

"Our Nurses, Our Future: Empowered Nurses Save Lives"

This , we’re celebrating a giant leap for nursing education! On May 4th, the Ministry of Health, SolidarMed, and SDC commissioned 5 new state-of-the-art Skills Labs in:
📍 Kaoma | Chitambo | Mbala | Nchanga | Kashikishi
**The Impact:**
🏥 Closing the Gap: Addressing the nursing shortage to meet WHO benchmarks.
📍 Rural Reach: 60% of our graduates stay to serve in rural areas.
📈 Massive Scale: 2,000+ new graduates will soon serve 2M+ Zambians.

On International Nurses Day, we celebrate the dedication, skill and compassion of nurses across Zambia, especially those serving in rural and underserved communities.

At SolidarMed Zambia, we are proud to work with Government and partners to expand a new generation of rural-ready nurses through the decentralised training model across nursing colleges and clinical training sites in Zambia.

These investments are strengthening practical training, improving access to care, and helping ensure that more communities can be served by skilled, confident and compassionate health workers.

On May 4th, rural healthcare in Zambia took a giant leap forward. The Ministry of Health, together with SolidarMed Zambia and the Swiss Government (SDC), commissioned five new Skills Labs in
📍Kaoma
📍 Chitambo
📍 Mbala
📍 Nchanga and
📍 Kashikishi.
These state-of-the-art facilities are transforming training for nursing and midwifery students creating better‑prepared health heroes ready to serve where they’re needed most.
Why this matters:
* Closing the gap: Zambia has about 20 nurses per 10,000 people, far below the WHO benchmark.
* Proven success: Over 60% of graduates from this model stay to work in rural areas.
* Massive impact: By year’s end, this approach will produce 2,000+ additional graduates, benefiting 2M+ Zambians.
