21/02/2026
Happy International Mother Language Day, celebrated annually on 21st February 2026 is a significant day for Deaf Children and the Deaf community.
It's a time to recognize that sign languages are the mother tongues for many, and to advocate for the linguistic rights of Deaf people worldwide.
Here are some key aspects of International Mother Language Day's relevance for Deaf Children:
✅️Sign Language as a "Mother Tongue":-
For many Deaf individuals, particularly the 5% born to Deaf parents, a sign language like Zambia Sign Language (ZSL) is their native language, acquired from birth just as hearing children acquire spoken language.
For the 90-95% of Deaf children born to hearing parents, early access to sign language is crucial for cognitive development and to avoid language deprivation, which can cause developmental delays.
✅️The Right to Education:-
The day highlights the right of every child to be educated in their mother language. For Deaf children, this means access to education in sign language. Advocacy groups use this day to promote multilingual education, where Deaf children can become fluent in both their national sign language and the written language of their country.
✅️ Global Linguistic Diversity:-
There isn't one universal sign language. Happy International Mother Language Day is an opportunity to celebrate the hundreds of distinct sign languages that exist around the world, each with its own unique culture. Many organizations share posts showcasing different sign languages to highlight this diversity.
✅️Advocacy and Awareness:-
Organizations like the Sign Language And Advocacy Awareness Development Association Of Zambia use this day to launch campaigns and urge policymakers to protect sign languages and ensure Deaf children have access to them.
It's also a time when initiatives like sign language e-dictionaries are launched to promote learning and inclusivity.
