*PRESS STATEMENT BY SU***DE PREVENTION OF ZAMBIA (SPZ) ON THE TRAGIC MURDER-SU***DE INCIDENT IN MISISI TOWNSHIP*

*FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE*

Su***de Prevention of Zambia (SPZ) is deeply saddened by the tragic incident in which a husband allegedly took the life of his wife before taking his own. This heartbreaking trend of domestic violence leading to murder-su***des is retrogressive, a grave human rights violation, and a threat to the well-being of families and society at large.

As a nation, we must reaffirm our commitment to fostering peaceful and respectful relationships in homes. Zambia, being a Christian nation, must uphold the principles of love, tolerance, and mutual respect. No disagreement should ever escalate to violence, and we urge couples to resolve conflicts through open communication, counseling, and seeking professional help when needed.

We call upon all stakeholders—including the government, religious leaders, traditional leaders, and civil society organizations—to intensify awareness campaigns on mental health, gender-based violence (GBV), and conflict resolution. As SPZ, we remain committed to advocating for su***de prevention and mental health awareness to curb such tragic occurrences.

Furthermore, we urge communities to be vigilant and support those experiencing relationship challenges by encouraging dialogue and intervention before disputes turn fatal. Let us all play our part in promoting peace and saving lives.

For those struggling with mental health issues, suicidal thoughts, or domestic conflicts, we encourage you to seek help. You are not alone, and support is available.

A 37-year-old man of Misisi Compound, identified as P***s Tembo, has allegedly strangled his wife, Tionenji, before taking his own life in their two-roomed house.

Police spokesperson, Rae Hamoonga, confirmed the incident in a statement on Tuesday, revealing that officers found Tionenji’s body in the sitting room, lying on the cushions and covered with a blanket.

She had visible injuries, including a swollen right cheek, bruises on her head, wrist, and legs, as well as a bloody discharge from her nostrils.

Tembo’s body was discovered intact, lying face down on the bed with blood oozing from his mouth and a white substance from his nostrils.

Police suspect he took his life after murdering his wife in an incident believed to have occurred on February 3 around 15:00 hours.

The alarm was raised by neighbors who last saw the couple on the evening of February 1.

Concerned after not seeing them for days, they attempted to check on the house, finding the door locked from the inside with a metal bar.

After notifying the landlady—who was also the victim’s mother—they broke the door open and discovered the bodies.

The remains of both victims have been deposited at the University Teaching Hospital (UTH) Mortuary for postmortem and burial.

Hamoonga stated that an inquiry file has been opened, and investigations are ongoing.

He urged the public to seek help from the Police Victim Support Unit to resolve disputes peacefully and prevent similar tragedies.

A 30 years old nurse in Mushili, Ndola was rescued by neighbours yesterday after she attempted to teki her own life by hanging after failing to find her name on the list of newly recruited health workers.

The neighbours suspected something going on after she came back from clinic where she volunteers shading tears, entered her house closed all the windows and locked herself inside the house. They had to break the main house door and the one leading to her bedroom where they found her trying to hang herself.

In a cry voice, she cried, "This is the 4th time am being left out, today I witnessed some nurses who recently graduated celebrating their deployment. Nearly all my intake mates at college have been employed while am still a destitute as if we didn't go to the same college. I have been volunteering for the past three years but nothing is working for me", she cried as other emotional women also joined in dropping tears . It was a sombre situation. So sad 😭 😭
