Understanding Post-Harvest Management and Value Addition to Selected Crops for Enhanced Food Security

The training emphasizes practical and knowledge-based approaches to minimizing post-harvest losses, improving product quality, and increasing the economic value of agricultural produce.
The training aimed to:

• Define Post-Harvest Management (PHM) and its importance
• Identify common problems occurring before and after harvest
• Understand how to control and maintain grain quality
• Build skills in proper harvest management practices
• Learn effective drying and grain protection techniques
• Understand threshing and cleaning methods
• Practice sorting and grading of produce
• Strengthen knowledge on safe storage, nutritional quality, and prevention of losses
• Discuss branching, drying, and storage of mushrooms
• Demonstrate four value-addition recipes

The Research for Agroecology Network of Southern Africa (RAENS) project is a regional initiative aimed at strengthening agroecology through research, knowledge sharing, and multi-stakeholder collaboration. It brings together farmers, researchers, civil society, and policymakers to promote sustainable, climate-resilient agricultural systems.

RAENS focuses on:

• Building evidence on agroecological practices
• Supporting innovation and farmer-led solutions
• Strengthening research networks across Southern Africa
• Influencing policy and agricultural transformation

Through this project, PELUM Zambia is contributing to the adoption of sustainable farming practices that enhance biodiversity, improve soil health, and strengthen resilient food systems.
