CHILDREN REJECT MOTHER OVER ALLEGED ABUSE, SEEK REUNION WITH FATHER
In my many years as a community leader, I have handled countless issues relating to child custody, but yesterday was the first time I encountered a situation where children vehemently refused to be in the custody of their mother, instead preferring their father.
I have handled a few situations where children choose to stay with their father, but usually with consideration for their mother. However, yesterday, a 13 year old girl and her 10 year old young brother stated that they do not want anything to do with their biological mother.
This is in a matter where some residents of George Compound in Lima Ward 30 brought a 32-year-old single mother to my office, accusing her of physically, emotionally and mentally abusing her three children, forcing a Good Samaritan of Kanyama to start taking care of her 7-year-old son, the youngest.
Full of tears, the two children pleaded with me to help them with transport money to travel to Kolwezi in the Democratic Republic of Congo, where their father has remained after his cohabitation with their mother came to an end. They stated that their mother’s temper and hatred towards them are beyond description.
“Mum has a bad heart, but she becomes worse when she is drunk, to the point of telling us almost every day that between her and us, one of us will soon go to the grave. She can be in the house with her boyfriend while we are left outside in the cold, even close to midnight. We don’t go to school and we literally beg for food from these neighbours,” cried the teenage girl, prompting me to join in their tears.
After wiping my tears, I asked the children’s mother to give me the number of her former ‘husband’, but it was unreachable. I quickly contacted the Department of Social Services, which advised that all three children be taken into their custody as arrangements are being made for their departure to the DRC.
Right now, I am preparing my black manda-manda to travel to John Laing compound to reunite a 20-year-old woman, currently being taken care of by a Good Samaritan in my ward, with her family and thereafter I will pass through Kanyama to pick up the 7-year-old boy and reunite him with his siblings.
The three children will temporarily stay at the Komboni House as they await Social Welfare to take them into custody, while arrangements are being made for their departure to the Democratic Republic of Congo.
