Day 4 | Kwizuma Village

Day 4 took us to Kwizuma Village in Chikankata District, one of our Water Does Matter communities and the reason this cultural exchange came to life.

The community welcomed us with song and dance before leading us to their former water source, a spring once shared with livestock and other animals. There, a remarkable 95-year-old woman shared how it was the only water source she had ever known before the Water Does Matter station was built.

The Watson family collected water from the spring and carried it back to the village, gaining a firsthand understanding of what daily life once looked like for many families.

We finished the day sharing a traditional meal of nshima, village chicken, beef stew and vegetables, experiencing the incredible warmth and hospitality of Kwizuma, and enjoying a ride on a traditional ox cart.

Day 3 | Part 2

The ZCIF Soccer Tournament brought together men’s and women’s teams for a day of football, with teams competing for places from first to fourth.

The Watson family donated soccer boots, made possible by Halls Head Junior Football Club, to the participating teams, helping equip local talent for future matches.

They also shared a little piece of Australia by introducing Australian Football, with children and adults alike eager to give it a try.

It was a day that celebrated sport’s ability to bring people together, create opportunities and strengthen communities.

Day 3

Day 3 brought the ZCIF Soccer Tournament, a day of football, community and connection. The goal of the tournament is to create opportunities for local teams, bring communities together, and build lasting relationships.

Nikki arrived with a bucket of freshly baked scones, which disappeared in minutes, while Kitty and Finn picked up a few Nyanja words from their newest teachers.

The day also marked the successful launch of the Zambia Community Impact Fund (ZCIF), an exciting step towards building one of Zambia’s largest community-led funding initiatives.

Day 2 | Chaminuka Nature Reserve

Day 2 took the Watson family to Chaminuka Nature Reserve, where wildlife, conservation and nature come together.

From an elephant encounter to enjoying a game drive and lunch at the lodge, it was an opportunity to experience Zambia’s incredible wildlife and natural beauty.

Day 1 | Part 2

This trip was about cultural exchange, water, and connection to Zambia.

The Watson family spent time with students at the Mwibeth Primary school, joined in our Water Does Matter games, and visited a second community where they drew water from a traditional well.

Nikki also learned to prepare nshima, Zambia’s staple maize meal and the heart of many family meals, whilst being cheered on with more traditional song and dance.

Every experience strengthened connections, celebrated culture, and reinforced the value of learning alongside the communities we partner with.

A welcome they will never forget.

The Watson family’s first full day in Zambia began with a music, dance, and a walk.

Together with members of the community, they collected water from a hand pump and traditional well before carrying it home, experiencing the same journey many families have made for generations.

It’s one thing to hear about the challenges of accessing clean water. It’s another to walk the path, carry the weight, and understand the reality firsthand.

Lasting solutions begin with understanding, connection and community ownership.

This is what clean water sounds like. 💧

The women of Kwizuma Village, Chikankata District are celebrating in song, in pure joy. This is their Water Does Matter water station. This is what it means when a community owns its water.

Global Empowers is on a mission to build sustainable, community-owned water systems across Zambia. Not as a handout, but as a foundation for dignity, health, and long-term empowerment.

This dance is theirs. We’re just honored to witness it.
