Demographic dividend is the economic growth potential that can result from shifts in a population’s age structure, mainly when the share of the working-age population is larger than the non-working-age population. It creates an opportunity for faster economic growth (as more people are working), reduced poverty, increased productivity and improved quality of life.
How is SRH relevant in relation to the demographic dividend?
Lack of SRH leads to increased maternal deaths, early pregnancies, child marriages and increased drop out rates. It also reduces economic participation and reduced health (STIs)
If sexual reproductive health is provided, there is a reduction in maternal deaths, early pregnancies, child marriages and drop out rates. It further increases economic participation and health.
What challenges are faced in providing sexual reproductive health?
Things such as harmful cultural practices, poverty, lack of education and sexuality being seen as taboo in many rural parts of Africa. Additionally, even if education is provided, it is mainly provided in English and not local languages and is seldom done in rural areas where the issues and significantly more.
How can we improve sexual reproductive health?
We can do this by increasing youth leadership and ensuring meaningful youth participation. Youths should have a space at the table where decisions are being made. We also need to invest and create strategic youth friendly SRH education and services. We need to meet youth where they are and make it understandable. Furthermore, we must utilize media and train individuals to deliver youth friendly messages on social platforms. We should also make these messages available in local languages and ensure that they reach people deep in rural communities. Lastly, we should ensure sexual reproductive health is included in government policy and disaster management.
