WASARec We advocate and co-create sustainable WASH solutions to improve access to safe and climate-resilient WASH for all.

The Centre for Water, Sanitation and Rehabilitation was established and registered in 2021 under the 2009 NGO Act of Zambia. The organisation was founded by Zambians to identify and address local WASH problems in peri-urban communities. Specifically, the organisation partners with various stakeholders to raise awareness on inclusive and climate-resilient WASH governance, build the capacity of local structures to identify and address equity and inclusion issues in WASH provision under CDF, and provides a platform for young people to participate in WASH governance and as agents of change for positive WASH behaviour change. The organisation's vision is a nation where WASH provision is inclusive of all and to ensure socio-economic transformation through inclusive and climate-resilient WASH provision. The organisation also offers psychosocial and referral support to persons with disability and child victims of WASH-induced violence. With collaboration from the Ward Councilors and Zonal representatives, we identify child, women, elderly and disability-headed households with intersectional vulnerabilities and offer them direct WASH infrastructure support. The organisation is open to local and international collaboration on WASH research that informs the development of feasible and inclusive WASH technologies in Zambia and across the region.

Congratulations to Our Executive Director! 🎉💧

The Centre for Water, Sanitation and Rehabilitation (WASAReC) proudly congratulates our Executive Director, Ms Shula Kasongamulilo, on her election to the Executive Committee (EXCOM) of Global Water Partnership Zambia (GWP Zambia) by GWP Zambia Partnership Members.

This appointment is a recognition of her leadership and commitment to advancing water security, sustainable water resources management and inclusive development in Zambia.

The GWP Zambia Executive Committee provides strategic oversight to the Partnership, including strategic planning, governance and supporting GWP Zambia's mandate of promoting and facilitating water security in Zambia.

As the WASAReC family, we are proud of this recognition of our Executive Director and the opportunity for her to contribute, alongside other sector leaders, to strengthening partnerships and collective action towards a water-secure Zambia.

Congratulations to our youth-led team, led by Eng. Desly Kalonga, for making it to the semi-finals of the World Food Forum Transformative Research Challenge! 👏🏾🌍

The team is advancing ModuDuck-Floating Duckweed Protain System, an innovative, low-cost modular system exploring the potential of indigenous Zambian duckweed as a climate-resilient source of protein for food and animal feed.

The innovation presents an exciting opportunity to contribute to food security, climate resilience and the circular bio-economy, while creating solutions that can be accessible to smallholder farmers and local communities.

🌍♻️ A successful training on Cooperative Governance and the Human Rights-Based Approach (HRBA) for our Green Enterprise Cooperatives (GECs) in Chainda!

We are promoting environmental stewardship and climate resilience through improved waste management in Chainda.

Our Green Enterprise Cooperatives (GECs) are one of the key pathways through which we are transforming waste into value, helping community members change their perception of waste from a burden to an opportunity for livelihoods and entrepreneurship for women, young people, persons with disabilities and men. In doing so, we are not only improving waste management but also social impact through creating inclusive economic opportunities and building community resilience to climate change.

our GEC members participated in a training on Cooperative Governance and the Human Rights-Based Approach (HRBA), facilitated by the Department of Cooperatives, Lusaka District. The training covered cooperative governance, leadership, record keeping, financial literacy and management, transparency, accountability, and the HRBA principles of meaningful participation, equality and non-discrimination, empowerment, and accountability—all of which are essential for building strong, inclusive and sustainable community enterprises.

The energy and commitment demonstrated by participants were truly inspiring and reaffirm our belief that change begins with communities that are equipped, empowered and ready to lead.

A heartfelt thank you to the Department of Cooperatives, Lusaka District, for facilitating the training, and to everyone who continues to believe in and support the EcoRise vision.

"Commemorating World MHM Day"

On 28 May 2026, WASAReC participated in the Menstrual Hygiene Day commemoration at Taj Pamodzi Hotel, Lusaka, under the theme “Together for a Period-Friendly World.” Convened by the Ministry of Education and partners. The event brought together government, civil society, academia, and learners to advance menstrual hygiene management as a matter of dignity, health, and education.

Key discussions reinforced the importance of evidence-based advocacy, integration of MHM into school health curricula, and the need to actively engage boys and communities in reducing stigma. Partners including Healthy Learners, BORDA Zambia, and others shared practical, learner-centred approaches demonstrating the value of collaboration and coordinated action.

WASAReC remains committed to strengthening community-driven WASH and MHM solutions and building partnerships that translate policy dialogue into grassroots impact.

“Advancing Zambia’s Water Sector Climate Adaptation Agenda”

WASAReC was honoured to participate in a Technical Review Meeting convened by the Ministry of Water Development and Sanitation and Global Water Partnership Southern Africa to support Zambia’s water sector climate adaptation agenda.

The meeting focused on revising the Terms of Reference for the Intersectoral Advisory Group (IAG), a multi-stakeholder platform that will provide strategic guidance, technical input, and coordination for the implementation of the Water Sector National Adaptation Plan (NAP).

During this meeting, we also assessed capacity development needs within the water and climate change sectors to identify key sector stakeholders' technical and non technical skills and operational capacities required for the effective implementation of the Water Sector NAP.

Strengthening coordination, technical capacity, and multi-stakeholder engagement is critical to building a climate-resilient water sector that can effectively respond to the growing impacts of climate change.

We are proud to contribute our expertise and collaborate with government, development partners, and sector stakeholders in advancing sustainable and climate-resilient water resources management in Zambia.

Today, 28th January, marks another milestone in WASAReC’s journey toward accelerating access to inclusive, safe, and affordable drinking water.

The Chibolya Water Kiosk Pilot Project was delivered through a strong partnership between WASAReC, Lusaka Water and Sanitation Company, and Viva con Agua, with the cooperation of the Water Trust and community leaders. The project has been implemented at the total cost of K280, 165.

This water kiosk increases community access to water from 6 hours to 13hrs as it will operate throughout the day due to enhancements in terms of the overhead storage and power backup.
