Job interviews can humble you fast ๐๐ญ โฆ
One of my mentees got shocked after i shared a job advert that was asking for 5 years experience yet he graduated last year with zero experience. He started complaining how employers are not considerate.
That reminded me of one job I applied for after graduation. Around 5 months after graduation.
The advert needed.
-Masters in Agronomy and any related courses
-16 years experience.
-Can speak English and write well in Swahili.
-Not allergic to any food
-Married with 2 kids and above.
Up to today I still donโt know what marriage and children had to do with managing a farm ๐๐
The job was for managing an export farm dealing with French beans and baby corn.
Being a sharp boy, I applied anyway. Surprisingly I got shortlisted for the interview.
I arrived there full of confidence. In the waiting bay were older men coming for the same interview. By the look of things, I was their sonโs age. Maybe younger ๐
These men matched the job description 100%.
I entered the boardroom confidently. The panel looked at my papers, then looked at me. My friend, that is when I knew these people wanted me to fail from the advert itself ๐
One old man on the panel asked me.
โKijana, what was todayโs headline in the Standard newspaper?โ ๐ฅน๐ฅน
On a serious note, how was I supposed to pass that interview?
That day I woke up at 4am. I prayed to God, prepared well, and made sure I arrived early.
Now tell me, at what point was I supposed to sit down and read newspapers? ๐๐
I left there defeated.
Maybe that interview trauma is why I chose farming. Even today I still donโt qualify for that job ๐๐
I canโt wait for the day I conduct interviews on my own farm. I promise nobody will be asked newspaper headlines ๐ญ๐
