Mr. Mubita served the school with dedication and commitment, and his contribution will always be remembered. He played a meaningful role in shaping the lives of many learners and colleagues during his time with us.

Quality education shall never be compromised – President Hichilema

President Hakainde Hichilema says the UPND New Dawn government is determined to make sure that the current free education does not dilute the quality of education.

“We can have free education but also quality education. The two are not mutually exclusive. In my view, the two are combined. We will deliver better education when we allow children to access education from all corners of the country. Quality education shall never be compromised.

“That’s why we are now working on the competence-based curriculum. All these measures should be able to improve the quality of education,” the President said.

President Hichilema was speaking when he officiated at the 17th Association of Non-aligned Teachers Union of Southern Africa (ANTUSA) festival in Livingstone today.

ANTUSA is a regional teacher interaction programme that promotes solidarity and professional development among educators in Zambia, Mauritius, Namibia, Lesotho, Botswana, South Africa, and Zimbabwe.

The association hosts annual events showcasing sports, cultural exchange, and symposiums.

Zambia is hosting this year’s event, whose theme is ‘Quality Free Public Education: A Must for Sustainable Development in the SADC Region.’

President Hichilema underscored that government is in the process of legislating on free education.

“I can confirm with you that free education will become law in a couple of months from now,” he said.

He added that teachers and their unions are considered as true friends of the New Dawn government.

“Please, continue rendering your advice with us,” he said.

President Hichilema said teachers can positively change society, and cited himself as a beneficiary of the impact of teachers.

“Nothing is greater than education. Education is the best investment, equaliser and inheritance.

President Hakainde Hichilema is tomorrow, Saturday, expected in Livingstone to grace the 17th session of the Association for Non-Aligned Teacher Unions of Southern Africa (ANTUSA) Games.

The games are being hosted by the Basic Teachers Union of Zambia (BETUZ).

Southern Province Minister Credo Nanjuwa told ZANIS in an interview that the President’s visit reaffirms his commitment to supporting the advancement of various programmes under the education sector.

The ANTUSA Games, running alongside a teachers’ marathon and an education expo, have attracted over 10,000 teachers from across Zambia and seven other Southern African countries, including Botswana, Namibia, Zimbabwe, and South Africa, among others.

BETUZ CALLS FOR DISCIPLINE TO BE UPHELD IN OUR SCHOOLS.

The Basic Education Teachers’ Union of Zambia (BETUZ) expresses its utmost shock and disappointment at the recent turn of events in which our dedicated teachers were arrested, charged, and released on police bond. This development is not only disheartening but also undermines the dignity and respect that teachers deserve in the discharge of their noble duties.

As a union mandated to protect and defend the welfare of teachers, we demand that due process be followed without compromise. Teachers must operate within a clear framework and parameters that safeguard both their rights and the interests of learners
We therefore call upon the authorities to intervene and ensure that all charges leveled against the affected teachers are dropped unconditionally, with the matter resolved administratively.

The Education Act No. 23 of 2011 and the Teaching Profession Act, clearly outlines the rights and responsibilities of both teachers and learners. They guarantee learners the right to education, protection from discrimination, and compulsory school attendance, while also mandating teachers to uphold professional standards and safeguard the learning environment. The Acts emphasize that discipline must be maintained in schools to ensure effective teaching and learning, and that both teachers and learners are accountable under the law.

Discipline must be applied fairly and proportionately, ensuring that both learners and teachers who breach school rules face appropriate sanctions. In this regard, BETUZ insists that the learner in question serve the full penalty and that no school, whether public or private, should admit him until the disciplinary measures have been fully enforced.

Information reaching us clearly indicates that the child in question is not a first offender. This is, in fact, the fourth school where he has had such confrontations with teachers.

MINISTRY OF EDUCATION STATEMENT ON INCIDENT IN SENANGA DISTRICT

LUSAKA, Zambia, 27th March, 2026 - The Ministry of Education has noted the reported arrest of five teachers in Senanga District in connection with an alleged incident involving a learner.

The Ministry wishes to reaffirm that schools are centres of learning, care, and moral development, where both learners and teachers must feel safe, respected, and protected. As such, the Ministry does not condone any form of abuse against learners, just as it equally upholds the rights, dignity, and professional standing of teachers.

We are deeply concerned by the circumstances surrounding this matter and the potential impact it may have on all parties involved. The Ministry emphasises that both the learner and the teachers deserve fairness, protection, and due process.

While discipline remains an essential component of the education system, it must always be exercised within established legal and professional frameworks. Equally, it is important that teachers are supported and protected in the ex*****on of their duties, without fear of undue exposure or harm.

The Ministry therefore urges that this matter be handled with utmost care, sensitivity, and adherence to due process, to ensure that justice is served without causing further harm to the learner, the teachers, or the integrity of the education system.

We further call upon parents, teachers, and communities to continue working together in nurturing discipline, respect, and responsibility among learners. Effective collaboration between the home and the school remains critical to achieving positive educational outcomes.

The Ministry will continue to engage relevant authorities and stakeholders to ensure that the matter is addressed in a manner that upholds the law, protects all individuals involved, and preserves confidence in the education system.
