Nyawa United - Behind the Scenes

Nyawa United - Behind the Scenes Humanitarian project promoting gender equality and empowering rural communities in Nyawa, Zambia. This will serve as a meeting place for the local community.

Nyawa United is a humanitarian project that was established in January 2019, with the idea of sending a girls' football team to Norway Cup. The project succeeded in sending Nyawa United to Norway Cup at the tournament's 50th Anniversary in 2022. The team made history by being the first rural girls' football team from the Southern African region to ever participate. In addition to the football team

Nyawa United, the project is in the process of building a community centre with a library close to the football pitch. Building the community centre, which will act both as a sports facility and library, is a continuation of our work in strengthening and empowering girls' and women's rights in particular. The Nyawa community has expressed a need for a common learning and meeting place. Read more about the project here: www.nyawaunited.org

The International Day of Sport for Development and Peace: Building Bridges, Breaking Barriers 🌍⚽

From the sand pitches of Nyawa to the green fields of Ekebergsletta at Norway Cup, Nyawa United girls are showing what’s possible when barriers are broken.

Through sport, doors are opening—today, many are continuing their journey at university.

More than a game, sport is creating pathways, opportunities, and lasting change.

Amanda () from Architects Without Borders () has travelled all the way from Norway to Nyawa! 🇿🇲

Yesterday, she visited the site where we are building the community centre and connected with local community members, together with , one of our amazing volunteers.

Amanda is part of the team at AUG currently designing the community centre in close collaboration with the Nyawa community, taking into account their needs, locally available materials, and the climate and environment. ☀️🌍♻️

We’re incredibly grateful to Amanda for taking the time to visit Nyawa. The community centre committee welcomed her by showing the plot, followed by a thoughtful meeting where they asked questions, shared ideas, and explored how to best make use of local materials. 🏡🧱

This World Water Day, we are reminded that access to safe water is not just a basic need but a matter of equality.

In communities around the world, women and girls often carry the greatest burden when water is scarce or unsafe, walking long distances, caring for those who fall ill, and missing out on education and opportunity.

Yet their voices are too often excluded from the decisions that shape water access and solutions. When women and girls are included and empowered to lead, entire communities become stronger, healthier, and more resilient.

Where water flows, equality grows ✊💧

Around the world, happiness takes many different forms. This International Day of Happiness, we’re reminded that something as simple as a shared space can bring people together, spark joy, and create opportunities. That’s why we’re building a community centre in rural Zambia.

What does happiness mean to you? 💛

Happy International Women’s Day!✨️

At Nyawa United we proudly unite around our mission to build and sustain a vibrant movement for girls and women in Nyawa through sports, health and educational programmes. We draw inspiration from the renowned words of Shirley Chisholm: "If they don't give you a seat at the table, bring a folding chair». This powerful quote exhorts us not to passively wait for opportunities or invitations but to assertively take control of our lives, carve out our own space, and seize the opportunities that come our way. In the spirit of this year’s IWD theme, “Rights, Justice and Action”, we cheer on all those who fight for women’s rights in a world where we see the rule of law weakening in the face of political tension, conflict and war.

Today, we hope you take the time to learn, speak out, and support the cause of justice for all women and girls! ⚖️👏

On this International Day of Women and Girls in Science, we celebrate the curiosity, resilience, and brilliance of women and girls shaping our world through science. At Nyawa United, we believe that empowering girls through education will strengthen communities and open pathways to a more sustainable and equitable future. When girls are supported to learn and lead, everyone benefits. 💙🔬

«When you educate a child, you change a life. When you educate a girl, you change a community.” — African proverb

Today, on the International Day of Education, the world is reminded that children and young people aren’t just the future. They are leaders, role models, and changemakers shaping a more just, peaceful, and inclusive world.

Yet too many children are still denied their right to safe, inclusive, and quality education simply because of who they are or where they live.

The Nyawa Community Centre is our commitment to changing that. A space built for learning, collaboration, creativity, and opportunity — open to every child who wants to grow, teach, share, and dream 🩷

Access to information should not depend on where you live, but in Zambia it often does. Rural communities face major barriers: only 49.8% of rural residents are literate, with literacy at 43.5% for women and 55.0% for men.

At the same time, 76.6% of people in rural areas live in poverty, limiting access to books, study spaces, and learning opportunities.

Low literacy makes it harder to access information, education, and economic opportunities, challenges felt most strongly in rural areas, and especially by girls and women.

This is the context for our work in Nyawa
and for building the community centre. 🏡

Together with the community, we are creating a centre with a library and multipurpose rooms, spaces the community identified as important for learning, meeting, and running local initiatives. The goal is a shared, community‑led space that strengthens local opportunities and supports Nyawa’s own vision for the future.
