Looking Back: WASH in Schools Sharing Event | 9â10 December
The Zambia Youth Parliament for Water (ZYPW) was honoured to participate in the WASH in Schools Sharing Event facilitated by BORDA Zambia through the WASH ânâ Soul Project.
Beyond learning and exchange, ZYPW was given the opportunity to share who we are, why we exist, and the work we are doing in schools as a youth-led WASH and climate advocacy platform.
In our presentation, we highlighted:
đWho We Are, a youth-led movement established in 2019, driven by lived experiences of rural water challenges
đ Why ZYPW Exists, addressing realities such as long distances to water, unsafe sanitation, exclusion of children with disabilities, waterborne diseases, and risks faced by girls
đOur Work in Schools, forming Climate & WASH Clubs, hygiene and sanitation sensitization, menstrual health awareness, drama and sports-based outreach, and youth-led WASH campaigns
We also shared key WASH challenges in schools, including:
⢠Limited access to safe drinking water
⢠Poor sanitation facilities
⢠Lack of menstrual health and hygiene support
⢠Facilities that are not disability-inclusive
⢠Weak hygiene culture
Importantly, we emphasized gaps in the WASH sector, particularly where youth voices are missing, from decision-making spaces to monitoring, innovation, and resourcing.
Our message was clear and collective:
Every child deserves clean water, dignity, and safety, no matter where they are born. Youth are ready to lead. Together, we can transform WASH.
We appreciate platforms that continue to create space for youth leadership, collaboration, and inclusive WASH in schools.
