On Friday, 27th June 2025, the Kachere Development Program, in collaboration with Participatory Ecological Land Use Management (PELUM) Zambia and with support from Markets and Seed Access Project (MASAP), successfully organized the Chipata District Traditional Seed and Food Festival at Mikalile Trading in Chipata. The festival was held under the theme:
“Nourishing Our Communities and Improving Livelihoods Through Seed Diversity.”
The event was officiated by the Chipata District Commissioner, who was represented by the District Administrative Officer, Mr. Kapembwa. The festival served as a platform to promote the preservation and utilization of traditional seeds and indigenous food systems, which are vital for food security, nutrition, and sustainable livelihoods.
A diverse range of stakeholders participated, showcasing various traditional seed varieties and indigenous foods. Notable exhibitors included:
• Share Africa Zambia (SAZ)
• Caritas Chipata
• Peniel Seed
• Community Markets for Conservation (COMACO)
• Zambia Agricultural Research Institute (ZARI)
• Farmer Outgrower Foundation (FOF)
Additionally, staff from the Anglican Diocese of Eastern Zambia (ADEZ) Synod Office were present to support the event.
The festival highlighted the critical role of seed diversity in strengthening community resilience and fostering sustainable agricultural practices across the district.
