Comprehensive abortion care

Comprehensive abortion care in Zambia is governed by the Termination of Pregnancy (TOP) Act of 1972, which allows abortion under specific circumstances, including threats to the mother's life or health, fetal abnormalities, and socioeconomic factors. The law requires approval from three medical professionals, including one specialist, and must be performed in a registered hospital or clinic ¹ ².

*Key Aspects of Abortion Care in Zambia:*

- *Access to Services*: Abortion services are available in public and private facilities, with some NGOs like MSI Zambia providing comprehensive abortion care.
- *Gestational Limit*: Abortions are allowed up to 28 weeks, or fetal viability.
- *Provider Training*: Healthcare providers, including nurses and midwives, are trained to provide abortion services.
- *Post-Abortion Care*: Facilities offer post-abortion care, including counseling and medical treatment.
- *Challenges*: Despite liberal laws, access to safe abortion is limited due to stigma, lack of awareness, and restrictive requirements.

*Efforts to Improve Abortion Care:*

- The Ministry of Health has implemented guidelines and training programs to enhance provider capacity.
- NGOs like Ipas and MSI Zambia are working to scale up abortion services and reduce unsafe abortions.
- Medical abortion, using mifepristone and misoprostol, is increasingly available ³ ⁴ ⁵.

These efforts aim to improve access to safe and comprehensive abortion care in Zambia.

Mental health is a critical aspect of overall well-being, especially for adolescents in Zambia. Some key concerns and potential solutions include:
- *Common mental health issues*: Adolescents may experience anxiety, depression, substance abuse, and trauma-related issues, often linked to poverty, family problems, and social pressures.
- *Stigma and lack of awareness*: Mental health is often stigmatized, and many adolescents lack access to accurate information and support.
- *Limited resources*: Zambia faces a shortage of mental health professionals, services, and facilities, making it challenging to address the needs of adolescents.
- *School-based support*: Integrating mental health education and support into school curricula can help identify and address issues early on.
- *Community-based initiatives*: Community programs can provide accessible support, education, and referrals for adolescents and their families.
- *Digital interventions*: Online resources, apps, and social media can offer anonymous support, education, and connections to services.
- *Family and caregiver support*: Educating and supporting families can help create a nurturing environment for adolescents to discuss their mental health concerns.

Some organizations, like the Zambia Mental Health Alliance, are working to address these challenges through advocacy, education, and service provision.

It’s was with great honor to have The University of Zambia -UNZA in our midst discussing the challenges adolescent and young people are facing in our community more especially on HIV PREVENTION, TEEN PREGNANCIES, SUBSTANCE ABUSE and many more issues facing adolescents

HIV prevention among adolescents is crucial, especially in high-risk regions like sub-Saharan Africa. Here are some effective measures
- *Education and Awareness*: Implementing programs like PREM-Kit, which focuses on information, motivation, and behavioral skills, can significantly improve HIV knowledge and attitudes among adolescents.
- *Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis (PrEP)*: PrEP is a safe and effective intervention for reducing HIV acquisition risk. It's essential to provide adolescents with access to PrEP and ensure they understand its benefits and proper use.
- *HIV Self-Testing (HIVST)*: HIVST can increase testing coverage, knowledge of HIV status, and linkages to care, especially when delivered through youth-friendly providers and combined with peer-delivered education.
- *Comprehensive Sexual Education*: Incorporating comprehensive HIV education in schools and colleges can empower adolescents with accurate information, reducing stigma and misconceptions.
- *Youth-Friendly Services*: Ensuring HIV testing and treatment services are accessible, confidential, and welcoming can encourage adolescents to seek care.
- *Digital Interventions*: Leveraging social media and digital platforms can help reach disconnected populations, providing information, support, and linkages to care.
- *Economic Empowerment*: Integrating economic empowerment programs with HIV prevention can address underlying vulnerabilities and improve overall health outcomes.

These measures should be tailored to address the unique needs and risks of adolescents, particularly in high-burden regions.

MINORS BUYING BEDROOM SWEETS ⁉️❌😰
Yesterday, when I was in town buying my vegetables in a fridom way, the lady that was selling me the vegetables asked me to look at what the young pupil was buying. To my curiosity, I asked what she was buying, and the lady said they were “bedroom sweets” and then she continued by saying why is a pupil at that age buying them.

Now, I was more interested to knowing what really was going on. To my findings, I was told they are traditional herbal or natural mixtures that are said to enhance romance, attraction, or intimacy between partners.

The question is why is a pupil who looked about the age of 14-15 years old buying them ⁉️

I was informed that in some cultures, older women (like aunties or marriage counsellors) give such herbs to brides before marriage as part of traditional teachings about maintaining love and cleanliness.

But this was a teenager buying these things and i’m afraid that early s£xualization of youth can lead to higher rates of gender-based v0lence, exploitation, and HIV/STI infections because It creates a cycle where young people value quick attraction over education and personal growth, reducing the quality of leadership and productivity in future generations.

The increasing trend of young girls even in school uniforms buying “bedroom sweets” is a wake-up call for every sector of society. It’s not just a personal choice. It’s a reflection of broken guidance systems, weak moral protection, and commercial exploitation of innocence.

I call upon governments and relevant stakeholders to strengthen child protection laws against the sale of adult or s£xual products to minors. Especially enforcing strict regulation of unverified herbal products marketed to minors.
