ZANASU Condemns the Expulsion of CBU Student Guild President and demands for Immediate Reversal
The Zambia National Students Union (ZANASU) has written to the Vice Chancellor at the Copperbelt University expressing deep concern and disappointment over the recent expulsion of Copperbelt University (CBU) Student Guild President, Castro Mulilo. The decision to expel Mr. Mulilo comes in the wake of his decision to cancel classes on June 26th, a move aimed at mourning the tragic loss of two students in a road accident and condemning the looting of private properties that occurred during a period of student unrest.
ZANASU recognizes the importance of maintaining academic order and discipline, but we firmly believe that the expulsion of a student leader for taking a stand on issues of genuine concern undermines the principles of free expression, social responsibility, and the fundamental rights of students to engage in peaceful protest. Mulilo's actions were motivated by a desire to show solidarity with fellow students and to address pressing concerns within the student community.
We believe that universities should be spaces where open dialogue and constructive engagement are encouraged and upheld. Punishing students for their efforts to address critical issues hampers the free exchange of ideas and stifles the growth of responsible citizenship among the youth.
In light of these concerns, ZANASU demands the immediate rescinding of the suspension of Castro Mulilo by the management at CBU. We call upon the university administration to reconsider this decision and to recognize the importance of nurturing an environment where students can express their grievances in a peaceful and responsible manner.
ZANASU has also extended a formal request to the university administration to respond to this matter within a shortest possible time. We believe that open communication and a commitment to addressing student concerns will contribute to a resolution that upholds the dignity, rights, and academic freedom of all students.
As an organization dedicated to advocating for the rights and well-being of students across the nation, ZANASU remains steadfast in our commitment to defending the rights of students to engage in responsible and peaceful expressions of concern. We urge CBU to demonstrate its commitment to these principles by rectifying the current situation without delay.
