Civic Responsibility and Youth Engagement Ahead of the 2026 General Elections

Yesterday, the CBU Governance Association, in collaboration with Restless Development through the Funsani Project, successfully hosted a civic engagement program at the Civil Lecture Theatre, Copperbelt University (CBU).

Held under the theme “Civic Responsibility: Expected Behavior of Youths During Elections,” the event aimed to engage university students and young people on their critical role in promoting peace, democracy, and responsible participation as Zambia prepares for the 2026 General Elections.

The program brought together key stakeholders including Restless Development (Funsani Project), the Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ), BBC Action Media, and SITADC Youth Organization, all united in the mission of strengthening youth civic awareness and democratic values.

Discussions during the event focused on:
- The importance of peaceful participation during electoral processes
- Youth responsibility in resisting political violence, misinformation, and hate speech
- Understanding electoral laws, procedures, and the role of institutions such as ECZ
- Encouraging informed decision-making, tolerance, and respect for diverse political views

Participants were actively engaged through interactive discussions, question-and-answer sessions, and practical insights shared by the partnering organizations. Students were encouraged to become ambassadors of peace, civic responsibility, and accountability within their communities.

The event highlighted the crucial role of young people as drivers of democratic stability and emphasized that responsible youth participation is essential for credible, free, and fair elections in Zambia.

As the country moves closer to the 2026 General Elections, initiatives such as this demonstrate the power of collaboration between youth organizations, institutions, and development partners in nurturing an informed, responsible, and empowered generation of voters.

Raising Awareness

Over the past week, The Executive Director - Mr. Bwalya Lengwe and The Deputy Executive Director - Mr. Jackson Muyembe for Sitadc Youth Organization had an opportunity to conduct a 2026 National Budget Analysis focusing on Health, Education, and Youth Employment in two constituencies: Nkana and Chimwemwe.

This work aimed to help community members especially young people and women understand how national allocations impact their daily lives and the services they depend on.

Key Focus Areas of the Analysis
– Free education, infrastructure, teacher recruitment
– Medicines, hospital equipment, staffing
– Skills development, empowerment funds, loans & grants

Why This Matters
Young people and women must be at the centre of national decision-making. Budget literacy empowers communities to:
- Hold leaders accountable
- Demand better service delivery
- Influence local and national priorities
- Understand how government spending affects opportunities for youth

Our Role as SITADC Youth Organization

As advocates for youth development, we continue championing:
✔ Equity in social services
✔ Increased investments in youth empowerment
✔ Transparency in how funds are allocated and used
✔ Platforms that amplify young people's voices

A big thank you to Zambia for creating this space through the (ASK)Project, and to the community members in and Constituency for engaging actively in the discussions.

Together, we are building informed, empowered, and active citizens.
Young people deserve a budget that works for them!
